Blackstone fuel pump
 

Guys, I'm finishing up a Blackstone fuel pump and I'm wondering what is
big deal with these pumps beside looking real funky.....educate me please.

Some of them are dual action/combination type - they have a port to supply vacuum to the wipers....maybe to a Columbia as well?....

Glad to help, Charlie....That they were used in racing engines means there is probably something else special about them. Did you notice anything special/different about the one you rebuilt?...

What is different about them? If I remember right the lower vac chamber is what drives the upper diaphram for gas, there is no direct connection with the push rod to the gas diaphram. They also have a different length push rod, do not remember the length.

The one shown posted here (in post #2) is apparently the 8BA version of the Blackstone attempt to provide a double pumper replacement pump for late flatheads.
Suspect that the one that is posted on the HAMB for sale site was never meant for "racing" but just an embellishment by the seller.
This is an early Blackstone add on double pumper for earlier flatheads (as gleaned from Ebay)

Guys,
There are three diaphragms......six screws......about 20% bigger than
the normal ( less funky ) flathead pump. The spring is uber stiff...smaller in diameter
but heavier wire and tighter wound.

The base is similar to (but not the same) as the early short 32 pump and might use a special short rod. Can't really tell about the rod from the pictures without seeing the bottom.

Just curious, what would be the reason for having vacuum assist on a "racing" engine.

What I've noticed and what ads for them back in the day claimed; was that they put out slightly higher pressure and 25% more volume. I think that they are neat as you can completely do away with the Fuel pump stand...

With an area of the diapragm being 25% larger you need a 25% tougher spring for same fuelpressure...then the vacuumpart...might be a bit tough on the camshaft pumplobe...

Mike brings up a good point about doing away with the stand but as we all know nobody rides for free. That super stiff spring does a 'number' on the face of the pump that seats

on the intake., it actually causes the mounting ears v to stretch....no jive.The Blackstone design is no more robust than the early Ford pump stands and we all know how the contact face gets roached on them. Try to imagine an 8BA double action fuel pump on an early stand. I hope I haven't lost anyone but I am including with the pump a couple heavy washers contoured to help spread the load
exerted by the spring onto the mounting ears. Hopefully I can make a push rod so I can test this funky pump.

Not much to my little knowledge. Standard on later 53 cars for the wiper.

Here's one for $99 on the HAMB.Would work on '32 & '33 V8's since the oil fill tube is in front .After '34 - how to fill or add oil to the crankcase ?.

I checked on the one on the HAMB. If anyone has one that includes the oil filler tube, I would be interested. I would like to try it on my 1946 Flathead engine. Let me know. Thanks. Randy in east Tn.
