Powder Coat Removal??
 

I got a part in the mail today and it was powder coated. What's the best way to remove the coating? Thanks!

I have nothing to lose. reverse engineering ? it was put on with heat, so I think heat
will take it off. I say this because brazing galvanized metal the AC torch bubbles that
right off and what ever don't smell it is poison.but thats what we use to do back then
and I'm still wake'n up in the morning LOL I don't know maybe the oven when she
ain't looking.. sam

I have heard that regular paint remover will take it off. It's at least worth a try.

hi; At my work we had to farm out parts for 'powder coat removal'... it was a messy job using heat. With fumes ect. Newc

I have taken powder coating off of several parts. I used "aircraft stripper",after applying the stripper wrap it with plastic wrap. It may take a little while, but it will come off.

If it was a good job with powder primer, and epoxy powder, just sand it and paint it with whatever color you want. If it was just sandblasted and coated without primer and cheap styrene powder, then remove it.
I have wheels sandblasted and powder primed and then paint them to match the car (40 wagon and 40 coupe) I don't think you can spray any better primer then the baked on stuff they use.

I have painted right over powder coat as well with great results. But if your looking to back to bare metal sandblasting will take it off.

I have had some small parts hot tanked overnight then blasted the next day. The hot tank seem to soften the powder paint so it will come off with blasting.

Sand with 320/400 then paint. Unless the powder coat is in poor surface condition.

I scraped some off with a utility knife today. I think I'm gonna just try using a wire wheel mounted on an old electric motor. Thanks for all your responses.

(I really dislike powder coating. I had a 2000 Ford ranger pickup and both of the rear shackles rusted to nothing. Their powder coating was still intact except for a couple of scratches that let the moisture in.)
