Double bearing pinion sleeve imstall

I need to replace the double bearings in a 39 rear end. I have the parts from Mac Van Pelt, But I think replacing that sleeve is beyond my capabilities. Am I correct to assume this? I have a OA torch to heat the case and a HF press, but lack any special tools and the experience.

Am I correct that this is beyond my scope to attempt? If so, any recommendations where I should take it from NYC to Bridgeport CT? I would love to have Mac do it, but it's heavy for shipping.

Any advice would be apprenticed.

Thanks,
Carl

its not that big of a deal if you have a press. i dont bother with any heat, they seem to press back in just as hard as they come out, and if any, i would use a small propane torch and not your oa as you could get it too hot. here's a pic of how i do it. you need something that fits the pinion end to push on, and something bigger than the race to push on. i use an old piece of axle tube for that heres a pic

Very cool! Thank you. That pic helps a LOT!

Check out the Tom Endy articles, they are for Model A's but most of the info
pertains to the early Ford rear axles. Go to the link and look under DIFFERENTIAL.

It will be much easier to press in if you get some dry ice and freeze the race prior to attempting to press it in place. Of course, you need to be very careful when working with dry ice and the frozen race, and must have made preparations ahead of time and work quickly.

This is the tool I have. Turn the Jack screw and it presses the pinion and race out the front. When reinstalling , the pinion must be in place with the inner bearing then install the race. . I usually freeze the race for a day or two , it helps it go in a little easier.

Neat Ken, but doesn't that put a lot of strain on the back of the case?

Freeze the pinion and bearing assembly ,heat the case and it will drop right in.

I use a setup like cas3 to press it.

thats a cool rig you made there ken. probably faster than cleaning the junk off my press and rigging all the presser stuff!

Been using it for at least 25 years and have done countless banjo rears with no issues.

Re: Double bearing pinion sleeve imstall

I put an aftermarket ring and pinion in a '48 rear. Only problem I had and I found out afterwards is that the two bearings on the pinion go on differently. The first should be, and it was, a nice press fit. The second, and it wasn't, is supposed to be a very close slip fit. The problem manifested itself in trying to set the preload. Because the second bearing was a press, it would "jump" small amounts as I was pressing it. First, there'd be very little preload, press a bit more, the bearing would jump a couple of thousandths and then, there'd be too much preload. I finally go it good but it would have been nicer if I had just taken a wee bit off of the "outer" end of the pinion shaft.

What I usually do is polish the pinion shaft then completely seal up the bearing with duct tape except for the I.D. And use a flapper wheel to polish the inside untill I get a slip fit on the pinion. The genuine Ford pinion bearings has one that's marked with a "P" and that's the one that goes on first and the other has a slip fit. It's almost impossible to achieve proper preload when the outer bearing is tight , it creates erroneous readings.

Just coming back to say thanks! You guys were right, it's out!

Special thanks to cas3 as I mimicked your photo.

Right or wrong, I froze the bearings and boiled the banjo in motor oil. What a mess! Not having a press, I had no way of knowing when it bottomed out, so I slammed my setup with a sledge hammer. I repeat, what a mess! I must have done something right.

Re: Double bearing pinion sleeve imstall

thats part of car tinkering--do what needs to be done, and figure out a way to do it with tools at hand. cedarholm, glad it worked out for you. on the install, grab the pinion shaft in the vise and tighten down the nuts until it will spin around once when you grab it and spin with vigor ! or is that vigahh ?

Re: Double bearing pinion sleeve imstall

On NOS Ford pinions, the forward bearing does slip on making adjustments easy. With aftermarket gears you need to take a little material off the pinion until the bearing is a slip fit. With the pinion in a lathe I use an oilstone to adjust the diameter as it is a pretty hard surface. This is definitely worth the effort when you need to adjust the preload. I have the KR Wilson tool to measure the preload but it is just inch pounds.

I will be using my original pinion but this is good to know - thanks!

Re: Double bearing pinion sleeve imstall

Question!!!

When re-installing the new double race, and I’m pressing it into place with the 1st bearing behind it. How do I know when I’ve pressed “enough”? I don’t want to mash it and I don’t want it loose - any advice?

Wish I had taken some measurements before disassembling, but I was excited.

Thanks!
Carl
