Looking for abetter way forward and hope you guys can help..Also do I really need it???

Re: Oil again

Should be plenty of other brands around surely, what's Canada doing? I wouldn't obsess about zinc but you will need some, more so for your 55, just going to have to add the zinc...

Re: Oil again

If zinc is really all that necessary, how does anybody get by using non-detergent oil?? (especially for break-in, when zinc is needed the most?)

Re: Oil again

Valvoline VR1 racing oil has zinc. Most auto stores here in the US has it but don't know in Canada. Has Canada done away with all zinc containing oils?

Re: Oil again

I use Rislone zinc and phos additive in both my '47 and '84 in differing quantities as recommended by them.

Re: Oil again

I like 50fordcoupeman use Valvolene VR1 racing oil which does have enough zddp for flat tappet engines. I would just as soon not have to add something else to the oil.

Re: Oil again

See if you can find Chevron Custom Supreme oil in your area.
It's great oil, has a good amount of Zinc & here I can buy it
at Costco.
Just a suggestion

What weight VH1 are you using? What weight do you recommend for break-in oil in VH1?

For break-in you want an oil without friction modifiers added to let your rings seat.
Buy an oil design for the job...lots of brands have them.

Remember, there was no such thing as a zinc additive in 1935.

Re: Oil again

Penngrade has zine as well as VR 1, both very good oils.

Haggerty has a nice article on oil compatibility for classic autos. You may also want to check locally about the availability of Classic Car Motor Oil or Schaeffer Oil which both have zinc incorporated in their formulation. The link to Haggerty article:

You just hush, flatjack! You'll spoil their fun. Don't confuse them with the facts!

A fact is that Phosphor and ZDDP is the best oil additives invented and only taken away because of catalytic converters.
You donīt need a crazy amount of it in a flathead but why not use an additive that works like a wearshield on your lifters.
Please tell me what is bad for the engine with using an oil with phosphor and ZDDP compared to an oil without them.

Each oil change I just add a bottle. I get it at the local NAPA store. A bit pricey.

Re: Oil again

the never-to-end-soon lubricants discussion (zinc/600w/corn head/WD-40/non-detergent/break-in and so on) always reminds me of weight loss supplements, health food products and armchair quarter-backing. Interesting perspectives, no end to solid advice and the occasional facts. And, ultimately no one is ever wrong.

So what weight VH1 is everyone using for normal running? I have not bought any and am curious.

Re: Oil again

Yes, to much ZDDP is damaging, but I'm starting to agree more and more with Ron Pilger!
