I have a new set of boards here and wondering what material would be best used to paint them.

I used two coats of Mixwax Ebony stain on mine, nice even finish, no brush marks.

Rustoleum makes a nice flat black paint that can be used for wood, it's name escapes me now, check out their site.

I have a new old stock upper plywood floorboard and it is flat black. I believe it was dipped (or possibly sprayed) as there are no brush marks and paint is on every surface evenly, including the slots for clutch and brake pedals, the accelerator opening, and on every outer edge.

Cut/made my own using marine board, used a sealing/waterproofing stain.
Looks good and fits perfect.
Saved a lot of money and had fun making them.

Do BLACK & rub across it, while wet, with a terry cloth. Looks NIFTY!

Simple.. GILSONITE!!! you can get it at a high end paint store, it is the ingredient in all GOOD deck stains and ford did NOT Paint the boards, he used a wood preservative.

Do you mean "MinWax"? I like the way yours came out. Brown stain looks a lot better than black to me. I was thinking of using the black preservative on the bottom and the brown stain on top for my '30 Roadster; however, your sealing/waterproofing stain sound like it would do an excellent job on both sides.

The previous owner put planks on the bottom part of the floor when the old floor board rotted out. The top part up against the firewall looks like faded black.

Mark, I am seeing a lot of products under the name Gilsonite. Can you please be more specific on the product you are recommending.

I too would coat in some form of ebony deck stain or something thats going to soak into the wood and preserve and water proof it especially the ends.

Good to know. My board are not coated around the sides and only varnished. But then again, they probably have never gotten wet in the 20+ years since the P.O. restored it.

Could you please provide the data that tells us that observation about Ford's finish on floor boards (besides the Judging Standards information)?

I would be interested in reading that aspect of production.

Certainly there has to be a paper trail to tell us that.

You guys with original floorboards...were they stained or were they painted black enamel?

My early 1929 Tudor with original floorboards, front and back, were painted black.

Anyone else?

For a start...Mark, where did you come up with this information "ford did NOT Paint the boards"?

Would like to see a paper trail if possible.

Just finished mine about an hour ago.... managed to save the original top board, the rest were either replaced with junk plywood or shot....was thinking a dark minwax stain would look nice...

Front toe board from an original '28 Briggs Fordor has factory installed runs . It was hung for painting or dipping.

Was it enamel or lacquer ?? Lacquer would have dried faster, enamel more durable.

Was Ford the only manufacturer of their floor boards or did others produce for their needs, ie Briggs & Murray ?

Could there have been variations in finish ?

Sorry, raising more questions than answers.

My Fordor floorboards have a black coating on them, almost tar-like. Can still kind of stick your fingernail into it on a hot summer day, near the ends. However, it is soaked into the boards, not just on the surface like a paint. I believe mine to be original. Its possible they could have been re-coated with something when the car exterior was repainted in the early 1950's.
