Engine #4020863 was made on Oct 7, 1930 to be exact.

Be aware that the numbers may have been changed over the years to keep title/registration etc. consistent.

For what reason(s) would an engine NOT have a serial number stamped on it?

If an A engine, could have been a service replacement that didn't get re-stamped with the takeout number. Also could have been purchased by a farm equipment manufacturer for use in non automotive application, although they often had their own number system and were stamped as such.
