choke rod grommet

The firewall in my '29 has been " altered " where the GAV/choke rod passes through. So that the grommet will fit correctly I need to drill a new hole in the bunch of brazing that is there now. Plus some grinding to make it smooth. What size should the hole be for a proper fit ? Thanks, Bill

On our 28 it looks like 1/2 inch I can get you better pics later. I don't think there should be a grommet

I don't think you want to put the grommet in the firewall. It belongs on the gas tank bracket. The hole in the firewall is covered by a leather washer and metal washer with a spring.

Somewhere in the deep recesses of my fading memory, I think I remember reading that originally Ford did not have a rubber grommet in the gas tank's upper retaining eye. The rubber grommet was introduced in later years by others.

That is not to say you should not put one there. It has been standard practice for a great many years. And then - my memory could very well be faulty. A quick look at the new RESTORATION GUIDELINES should give an answer, if nothing definitive comes forth from the experienced minds of the FORD BARN FORUM.

My '28 has the leather washer with a steel washer then a spring holding the two washers up against the firewall on the engine side like Ed Saniewski said. Can't remember where I found the information on how this was assembled as my vehicle was a basket case when I purchased it.

The richpin06a Model A videos on YouTube show a '31 choke rod grommet set being replaced. Not sure if it will apply to the earlier models or not, but it may be worth a look to see. I am not sure as to how to link the video at this site, but you can do a search at YouTube and find the video if the link here does not work.

In the video, I believe they should have the leather washer against the firewall.

The leather is against the firewall then the washer, a long spring over the rod holds the washer and the sleeve tight over the connection at the carb.
