Closed car windwing question
 

Did Ford ever put factory windwings on model A closed cars? I have never heard of original closed car windwings. Maybe I have just never see any that looked original.

You raise a great question. Probably not as a production item but for sure if one was ordered by the customer at the dealership thus sending that information on to the assembly plant where the order was taken thus windwings on the Model A closed car that you ordered.

Of coarce the above is hypothetical but one never knows.

I guess what I was wondering is: Did Ford ever manufacture windwings for model A closed cars. It seems to me that there would not really be a need for windwings, as closed cars had roll up windows if it got windy inside. I know there were some aftermarket closed car windwings made.

Interesting question Rusty.

I don't recall the need for them on our '29 Tudor never gave it much thought at the time. I recall seeing a set on a '30 Coupe and another time on a '30 Tudor at antique car shows, but I guess I just shrugged it off as an accessory somebody added never really thought that it might have been a practical item:confused:

Correct me if I am wrong (I do not have the book in front of me) but isn't there a photo of a few Model A's on a auto carrier truck in the book The Model A Ford as Henry Built It, that have windwings on the closed cars?

I hate to walk way out to the shed where all my books are...to lazy I guess.

If she's an old GROUCH, then spend the MONEY on something FRIVOLOUS (SMILEY FACE!) or buy a BEEF STEAK, for the bruise around & under your LEFT EYE!! There were many aftermarket varieties available, but Ford did not come on board till 1931 when it made 'Draft deflectors' an official accessory.

Thanks for posting the pictures and information of the closed car draft deflectors (aka windwings). With the Ford box shown in the first picture, I guess they must have made them, at least for sedans, even though it was an accessory, not factory installed. I think they would probably fit most closed cars - at least 30 and 31 model A's.

So Ford only offered them for the Fordors or were they sold for other closed cars as well? These are about the only accessory I am considering for the delivery other than gauges. Rod

I completely deaf in my left ear so your theory wouldn't work for me anyway and plus, no OLD gals or Grouchy gals ride in my A............;)

According to the Chicago Service Letters 6/19/31, there were four versions available:
A-18275 for Models 45A, 48A, 50A, 54A, 55B.
A-18276 for 45B, 50B.
A-18277 for 160A, 160B.
A-18278 for 190A.

I presume the main difference between them is the dimensions of the glass.
