Rebuilding Zenith Carburetor
 

I am in the process of rebuilding a Zenith Carburetor and am having difficulty getting the secondary well fitting out. I am destroying the the head with my screw driver. Any tricks to the trade?

Yes. Restoring the model a carburetor the Rex reheis way is a good reference.
Available thru the parts houses.

File both faces flat about 1/16" up from the tip on the screwdriver. Make sure it fits the slot in the well and or jet to prevent damage. Flat tip screwdrivers have angled faces and they tend to cam the screwdriver out of the jet or well. I have screwdrivers that are only used for carburetor work.

Plus it helps a lot to heat the casting and then dunk in a cold bucket of water. The heat and cool helps to break it loose.

All of the above in that order 1) a good fitting screw driver, 2) heat . 3) An overnight soak with penetrating /easing oil. 4) Posssibly using an extractor 5) Finally coup-de-grace very very careful drilling with incremental sizes of drill through the brass and then un winding the brass shards remaining in the threads of the housing ( a left hand drill helps but is not essential) . I usually managed to shift them with with 1) or 2) rather than resorting to 4) and 5)

Step 1a.

If jet does not budge right away ... STOP before the damage is done and then follow the other steps!

Steps 1, 1a and step 2 are most likely to be successful.

Good news is the baby survived the operation!



I tried all of the above, soaking in carb cleaner, soaking in penetrating oil, (both over night), then heat, (did not dip in cold water as I was afraid of cracking carb.), then I tore up the head pretty good after all these attempts. Finally drilled, easy-outed, and then re-tapped.


Turned out very well. On to next step.

Lots of heat then in cold water, if that does not work you have to drill them out like said in the above thread. Rebulit 100's of them.

When drilling them out use just big enough bit to almost reach threads then pick out brass to threads.

Do what thread #2 says, But might have to do it a couple before it breaks loose.

Soaking in E-vaporust before any disassembly makes all the hardware come loose !
