29 Tudor door seal/bumpers/door glide clip
 

I am trying to get this car back together--right now I am hanging the doors and installing whatever needs to be put on the doors.

#1---I was putting the bottom rubber bumper on and I assume that the rubber parts needs to be trimmed/ground/beat into position--am I correct??

#2--- I have a sealed plastic bag with a rubber "bottom door seal 1928-31" inside--(see picture) Is this an original part for this car??? If this part belongs on this car, which way is up???

#3---Did the genius who designed the door alignment door parts (see pix) leave any instructions how these parts are to be installed??

#4--- The drivers side front fender has a side mounted tire. How is ANY ONE of average girth supposed to enter through that door without causing damage to the door????

Fred, The bumper in photo one looks a little too wide. Mine fits the channel without the bow your has. In photo #3, Berts catalog description of the bottom door seal states "staple to the upholstered door panel at the bottom to seal the dirt and dust out of the car." Without the door panel, I don't think you can attach it properly. While I haven't seen a photo of the installation, I would assume the flat portion staples to the panel and the bulb portion faces down and seats between the door and the sill.

Thanks for your reply--I guess that bottom bumper will need some trimming!!!

The bottom seal according to the Bratton's Catalog "Door panel clips hold rubber in place for closed cars" Looks like that may be a challenge!! I may leave that one in the plastic bag!

Any idea on how to install the alignment bumpers & clip???

No problem with the bottom door seal. There should be a flat side and a side with a small raised "line" on the other.

The flat side goes against the door itself.

Cut the rubber strip the same length as the door panel. Position the strip against the door panel itself with the "line" as a guide going along the bottom of the panel. Mark the rubber strip for the holes for the panel clips. Position the strip on the panel then assemble the panel on the door.

This is how it was done. I think there is a picture in the Service Bulletins somewhere showing this BUT it is a Roadster/Phaeton door I think.

ALSO to get more "puristy"...there are brass corner clips for the bottom of the panel, right and left but I do not think any one sells these. These are cardboard reenforcement parts hidden by the upholostry.

Relooking at your photo #3...if that is what you pulled out of the bag...I think it is the wrong style weather striping...What you want is a flat rubber strip about 2 inches wide...flat on one side and flat on the other with a rubber raised line on that one side.

Regarding the skinny opening, I am working on a friends Tudor with sidemounts. The space to get in the car is indeed ridiculous. The vendors sell different length straps so the door doesn't inadvertently hit the tire and pucker the door in.

Thanks for your reply--I am aware of how the parts go together--my problem is HOW do I get them fitted into the door??? If I put the two rubber parts in first there is NO way I am going to get that brass clip in there. If I put the clip in first I cannot see how I would get the two rubber pieces in!

I recall I had a hell of a time getting the brass clips in. I do know that the clips will bend a little, then snap in two pieces. I don't remember exactly how I managed, but I did use needle nose pliers and stuck my tongue out to the left a little.

Okay--so how do I tell which one I need--buy one and if is too long, buy another. When I look up these parts in the Bratton's catalog I do not see a "long and short" bumper. Is there a secret society that sells the long and short bumpers????

How about my question as to how to install the alignment parts where the dovetail goes into the door?

I was thinking (I haven't tried it yet) install bottom rubber--then clip--then top rubber???? There has to be a trick to it--I can't image these doors going down the assembly line and workers running alongside the door trying to get these parts installed--would seem like a "I LOVE LUCY" TV segment. I wonder how many workers went home every night with a pocket full of rubber bumpers & clips--likewise some cars that never had them installed.

I finally got those dovetail rubber and brass clips into the door. I ground down about 1/16" on the top rubber (they are all the same but the one that I ground down I put in the top). Then I took the brass clip and radiused the four corners at the end of the clip (see pix) I installed both rubber parts and I took a Q-tip with some alcohol and coated the rubber parts. With that done I was able to push the brass clip in between the two rubber pieces. Getting the clip ends tucked behind the door sheet metal was a little tricky. I used a needle nose pliers and a small screwdriver to get them in place. After everything was installed I coated the brass clip with a lube that I use for this purpose. See pix

The clip looks like it is not straight but after the door opens and closes it was corrected.

Now that you know how to get them in you need to take them out and turn the rubber pieces around. In the picture in post #9 see 3-A1 and 3-A2.:eek:

Did the bottom bumpers look and fit better after flipping them? Pictures of the reversed bumpers would be helpful.
