The model a mechanics handbook vol 1(Les Andrews)p.194, says to use #20 coated copper wire, wind each field coil 48 turns each, in opposite directions, one end of each field wire soldered to the connecting clip the other end to the brush holder.

I can find wire at the local surplus store sometimes. Otherwise check ebay.

I have to do the same thing. Does anybody know how many inches long the wire has to be?

The attached article may help. The wire needed can be obtained from an electronics store. There is probably one in your neighborhood.

The article is about converting from 6-volt to 12-volt, however, if you are just replacing the field coil windings, it is the same drill.

A friend and I have done several of these conversions. Our experience is that the length of the wire is not critical, and the stacking of the windings is not critical.
