Fan and Water Pump power consumption? Has there been anything written about the Model A fan and water pump power consumption? I am trying to look into how modifications might increase the available power.

Re: Fan and Water Pump power consumption? I remember reading a study about the efficiency of the different types of fans but I'm not sure about power consumption. I wish I had a link to post for you but I can't remember where I saw it.

Re: Fan and Water Pump power consumption? I think it was covered in one of the early Secrets of Speed Society magazine . I'm not sure which one . Jim Brierley would probably know . The best that I recall Jim was the editor or some such at the time .

Re: Fan and Water Pump power consumption? What modifications are you considering? If you didn't need to sit and idle you could probably remove the fan? Be sure the water pump has roller bearings instead of bushings?

Re: Fan and Water Pump power consumption? Playing Devil's Advocate, are you wasting energy trying to save energy? The pump impeller is not creating pressure per se', so there is minimal power consumption there, ...and at what speed does frontal air flow thru the radiator actually assist in rotating the fan?

Re: Fan and Water Pump power consumption? a fan clutch would work..

Re: Fan and Water Pump power consumption? Some time ago, Klings in Tempe Arizona was selling a serpentine belt conversion for the Model A and indicated how much HP it saved, but I don't remember if there were figures for the hp required for each the old and new system.

Re: Fan and Water Pump power consumption? Hot Rod magazines engine masters video show a loss of 30Hp on a I think 350hp Chevy 350 with a mechanical fan. So maybe 10%?
My off topic Phaeton was noticeably quicker off the line with out a fan using a '32 water pump and adapter. While cruising at 25mph the water temp was at 180. Stopped it overheated pretty quick of course. This was a Race of Gentlemen car and I had a 9in electric fan that I hung in front of the radiator in the pits to cool it off. So is 4hp worth it on a stock Model A? In my opinion nope. I would just put on a Snyders hi compression head as Paul said. |
