Best spark plug
 

Hi All,
Just wondering what would be the best spark plug to run in my Flattie?


IT a very early 47 with the stock engine.

I've never had a problem with Champion H10C. They're cheap as all get out and get the job done.

I've always used Motorcraft 216's in mine . Never had a problem ....... F F

A lot of people like NGK's, but I've never had a problem with Champions.

It is kind of a pain buying 8 individual "lawn mower plugs" instead of a box of 10 like in the old days. BTW, does anyone have any idea what Champion (and some other plug manufacturers) were thinking when the put them in boxes of 10?

By the time you need another set of plugs, you buy another box of ten, just like when you see the bottom of the mayonnaise jar, you chuck it out it and open a fresh one. :D

I have used Champion H12's for20 years. My old friend Vic Piano said he would not use them in his lawn mower. Blondes, brunettes, redheads,. My new best favorite is a gray head,

When I first ordered Champions for my 8ba with EAB heads they came individually packaged as lawn mower plugs. They seemed to run fine but when I rebuilt the engine I changed over to Autolite 216's base on comments here and over on the HAMB. Don't know if there was any real improvement over the Champion's but that's what I'm running for the time being.

My car had Autolite 216's when I got it. Using ngk B6L now and never had a problem with either.

Had this happen with a NGK plug once on an alternate make engine. Just finished changing the valve body and this happened upon almost completion. Thank God it came out with a tap on a screw driver and twist as it was 8inch down thru a little hole in the valve body!

I had an electrode pull out of two or three brand new different sets of AL 216’s. I switched to Champ H 10’s......Mark

I used Champion H-10 for years. I switched to NGK and did not notice any difference.

Good marketing - Buy 4 boxes and then you will have enough for 5 changes!!

I use NGK plugs and just read the info. below on the internet. I always used a dab of anti-seize. Now I find it's not good to do so.
Is it true re: use of anti-seize compound? If so, why? READ BELOW.

"Thread breakage can sometimes involve removing the cylinder head for repair. Metal shell stretch changes the heat rating of the spark plug and can result in serious engine damage caused by pre-ignition. Do not use anti-seize or lubricant on NGK spark plugs. It is completely unnecessary and can be detrimental."

Is this statement for the new, modern day aluminum spark plug holes or is it specifically for our flatties? I think it’s for more modern day stuff ( a CYA-statement perhaps?). If you have used anti-seize all this time and without any negative effects, I would continue to do so. We would need a lot more data to draw any specific conclusions for stock or aftermarket lumi heads, old or new, driving conditions, how far you go, and whatever other variables you come up with ....

After they mentioned thread breakage and shell stretching, the statement says " Do not use anti-seize OR LUBRICANT on NGK spark plugs." This makes me think they caution against over torquing the plug and resultant damage. Seems they are cautioning against head and/or plug damage in any engine.

Remember that commercial? When your bank says NO. Champion says YES!


But I wouldn't use a Champion spark plug for anything, even a lawn mover.



I have put NGK plugs through some serious torture over the years and they have never let me down.

I'm in the minority here, but I put B6L plugs in my 8ba when I built it 5 years/5000 miles ago. It has started missing above 3000 rpm a while back. After checking the distributor, I began ohming plug wires and the plugs. Some of the spiral wound wires showed open and some of the NGK non resistor plugs read really high. One of the plugs read 38000 ohms and several more in the thousands. I replaced the wires with low resistance spiral wound and plugs with Autolite 216 and now it is happy again. I know they eventually wear out but 5000 miles is a little premature for wires and plugs, I think. The Autolite plugs all read less than 50 ohms resistance.

I use NGK also, because I got them on sale in bulk (the Studebaker runs the same plug also).
