Still needing advise on 52 F1

Recent tune up on all stock engine
Plugs
Wires
New points
Rotor and cap
Did not replace condenser.
Adjusted timing as advised in other post.
Changed fuel filter
Adjusted carb mixture

Trucks starts great cold or hot
Run well at idle
Cruise around town and 55-60 no issue

Problem is if I get on it - it doesn’t wind out, but bogs down. It feels like it’s lacking fuel. But that’s only my guess.

Thoughts?

Check to see if your accelerator jets are working.

Does it backfire ??? Backfire + no fuel or very lean ...........

Re: Still needing advise on 52 F1

No back fire. Just bogs down when hitting gas peddle hard.

I’ll have to google accelerator jet. I’m not verse one crab parts

Sounds like it is starving for fuel. Is there an in-line filter? Has it been changed? Have you removed the sender and looked in the tank? Is it clean? Are you sure you have the correct gas cap? I think your truck uses a vented cap. The symptoms you have are very similar to a car I once owned. Turned out somebody used some sealant around the sending unit and a small piece of sealant fell off and would partially block the gas line in the tank.

I would also guess the accelerator pump, if it bogs instantly when you push the accelerator pedal down hard. With the engine stopped and the air cleaner off, you should see two distinct sprays of fuel (assuming it's a V8) coming out of the accelerator pump nozzle that shoots fuel down the bores of the carb above the butterflies when you stroke the throttle linkage pretty far. Easiest to do with the link from the gas pedal disconnected from the carb throttle arm. Google "holley 94 carb diagram" and you'll see an exploded view. Part #40 does the squirting. Part #33 is the accelerator pump plunger that pushes the gas out. It'll wear or shrink and you get poor action. I think the standard NAPA carb rebuild kits come with those. Good luck

Thanks all good advise. Glass bowl fuel pump, rebuilt by CharlieNY last spring. Filter just changed.

One other point I failed to mention.

When putting putting timing light on. I disconnected the vacuum and taped off. Timed to mark and then reconnected. I then hit with timing light again and noticed it was in same position (right on mark). I also noticed there was some play in the vacuum disc when trying to reconnect the rigid vacuum line. Is there supposed to be some play in the vac disc?

With the timing light connected do you see the timing advance at higher engine rpm's?

Jerry I didn’t try that but will and let you know, tomorrow

If the screws that attach the vacuum can to the distributor aren't tight, you can feel some play.

Make sure the valve at the tank is completely open! Have you ever cleaned the screen in the valve, that sticks up into the tank? Have you done anything with the fuel line to the pump? That is the low point of the system and mine was so full of crap that I decided to just replace it. It made a big difference in how much brown sludge I'd find in the pump bowl and carb, even with filters.

I found the retainer pin fell out of the vacuum advance inside the distributor on a 8BA one time. Started fine but fell on its face when driving.

A possible that hasn't been mentioned, check your exhaust . A plucked exhaut will do that also . It's unlikely, but worth looking into .
Stick a vacuum gauge on it while driving.

Re: Still needing advise on 52 F1

Thank friends

Ross - I took the fuel pump glass bowl off and even tho clean, I replaced the screen. What other screen are you mentioning, that sticks up into tank. I have a lift and can easily access the hose connected to the tank. Which btw looks new, like previous owner may have replaced.

Skid - where is the retainer pin inside the distro? Are you referring the points screws?

40cpe - the two screws that hold the distro are tight but there is a slight play in the vacuum tank. I noticed this when trying to reinstall the metal vacuum hose. that goes from the tank to the carb.

At work today, but off tomorrow, will try all suggestions.

How's your vacuum, how much fuel pressure do you have? I think it's supposed 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 lbs someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Still needing advise on 52 F1

Does your tank have a right-angle shutoff valve on the fuel connection? That is what is stock. On its inlet (part that screws into tank) there is a metal tube made out of brass screen that sticks up into the tank. You can't replace it without draining the whole tank.

You should be able to look down thru the filler and see if there is a bunch of crud in the bottom of the tank.

Don’t think I have that under tank. Will look tomorrow. Tank looks fairly new so probably reproduction

I tried this morning and when reving the timing does advance.

One other thing I noticed. The timing mark does not change, vacuum connected or disconnected and taped at idle.

Still haven’t resolved yet.

Re: Still needing advise on 52 F1

There is very little to no vacuum at idle, so that is normal. The distributor is seeing the vacuum from the carburetor ports, not manifold vacuum.

Jerry thanks. I will pull oil bath air cleaner and see if jets are working properly then put truck up on lift and check fuel lines, later this afternoon.
