Front Fender Welting Sliding Out On '40

My '40 wagon has nice front fender welting so I don't think I need to change it but the upper 8-10 inches on both sides has slipped out of position. Do I need to remove both fenders entirely to position the welting properly? Should I glue the upper ends in somehow?

Where exactly are you referring to? The "upper"...??? Between the cowl and fender? Between the inner fender and the fender proper?

A picture would be a big help

Re: Front Fender Welting Sliding Out On '40

It's the last few inches of welting at the upper end between the fenders and the cowl on both sides.

I have never been able to post pictures because the only camera I have is a Nikon 35 mm and I think it has too many pixels.

Thanks, Phil

I am sure "Kube" will provide the correct answer but here's mine.

Top end of welting is long enough to be folded underneath and squeezed tight by fit of fender to cowl .

Ignore the dust.

If your welt continues to work out of those areas, a fitment issue between the fender and cowl is most likely the culprit.
The upper end, visible when the hood is open was in fact folded over originally. The lower end was simply cut off.
The welting was stapled to the fender originally. I may very well be the only guy that still does that.
I'd suggest you start by folding that upper end over and if that doesn't work, utilize some type of permanent adhesive.

I tried to post pictures but I got stuck on "resize". It didn't give me the "lower" option. And it kept falling out of the Edit file. Gave up after a dozen tries.

The welting is actually falling out top and bottom as depicted in the pictures I e mailed in. Upper end on the right side and lower end on the left side. I am not sure if the welting I have is the good stuff or not.

Thanks Mike.

Is there a kind of adhesive you recommend? Maybe the 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive or?

Select one of the very high bond double sided tapes shown on this page.

"Kube": I am intrigued that you still install the fender welting as originally done using staples.
I think I recall the welting on the DeLuxe grille vent side panels was also stapled in place. Just curious as to how you do it. Are the staples specially made stainless?

Kube,
Do you have a stapler capable of doing this?
I used to put staples in by hand. if you line it up with the original holes in the steel you can do it without any special tools.
Time consuming. But it works.

I cheat I suppose. I use stainless wire.
The authentic staples were round - not flat as is commonly found these days.
And yes, you are quite correct about the welt at the grille.

I used an Arrow T-25 stapler to fasten the welting on my 40. This stapler uses half round staples for stapling round phone wire.
