what must be done to the starter to switch over to push button start?

A post-or threaded bolt to connect the cable to must be installed . A solenoid will need to be used and a couple of correct length cables for the application .

Replace the contact button on the starter with a stud and add a 6 volt positive ground starter solenoid. (if still 6 volt positive ground). This job would require a big soldering iron to solder in the stud. This has been done more then a few times.

I ordered and am very pleased with the no foot starter that I found advertised in the Restorer Magazine. I have the ability and access to the parts to make it up myself but I was impressed with the way they used the switch design to make it work without compromising a switch. The good news is you can always go back. So, I went with their product. kind of 'spensive, but well done. My wife definitely appreciates it because the foot starter was hard to reach and hard to press. I recommend it. It took only a few minutes to install.

You can either put a post in it from a later starter or drill and tap the copper contact
and put in a stud.

If you have 12 volts, you can get a direct bolt in gear drive starter.
Besides a push button or key turn start, you get rid of the bendix spring problem.

I would suggest you look at the reproduction "Up-Start" or the "Sparky Start System" options.


These are mechanical devices that take place of the floor starter button. The "Up Start" is a lever that mounts to the steering column mount. You just pull up to start the car. Very easy installation and works very well. I have an original one in my car and it works very well.


I have not used the "Sparky Start System" that uses the spark control lever to start the car. If you push the spark lever all the way up, it will activate the starter.


Both of these designs have been around for many years, I think from the 1930's. No modifications to the electrical or any other part of the car. May be would be easier than installing an solenoid and push button. Brattons have them in their catalog, may be others also have them.

I installed the Sparky Start because of a twisted knee, easy install and works very well. You can still use the foot button if you choose with the SS installed. Draws a lot of attention from spectors at shows

I have exact same set up , I put a push button starter switch on floor where original one was. End of starter staying engaged and busting up bendix and amature bending.

The up start leaves the right hand free to use the choke .

As does the Sparky Start and you never forget to retard the spark........
