Model A transmission flange Hi everyone,
I'm new to Model A's and have a question. I am in the middle of a motor install on my 29 pickup. I have the engine in, and bolted up. The problem I am having is that I can't get the bolts to line up where the torque tube bolts to the transmission flange. To me, it seems that the flange is bigger on the transmission than the spacer, and that 2 piece flange on the tube. Did Ford make different flanges for different year transmissions, or am I doing something wrong. Thanks for any help. |

Re: Model A transmission flange I bought it with no motor/trans. And yes, after yanking the motor/trans back out, the flanges are different hole spacing. I believe that I have another that will work. Thanks.

Re: Model A transmission flange 1 Attachment(s)
The device that bolts to the rear of the transmission is called the rear bearing retainer. There were about four or five versions of it, but only two differences that can cause you grief. All will bolt to the transmission with four bolts. However, the six bolt holes the U-joint housing assembly bolts to can have a different bolt pattern, and that is where the grief comes in. A change in the bolt pattern was made sometime in 1929. In this day and age it does not matter what year your car is because parts have been shifted around over the years, what matters is that you have the right combination. The U-joint housing and the rear bearing retainer six bolt hole pattern must match.
Attached is an old article that speaks to some of the changes that were made to the transmission that people should be aware of when overhauling a transmission. Some people believe that Henry made these changes only to confuse and confound the next one hundred years of Model A enthusiasts. Tom Endy |
Re: Model A transmission flange Changed the retainer parts today, and everything lines up now. Thanks to everyone for all the help!
