Speedo for T5?

Ok, so I know this is "taboo", but I went with a T5 transmission in my '31 coupe and am now wishing I had a speedometer. I've searched around and can't find any information on what guys have done to solve this. I want to run the stock speedo or at least the stock dash so is there a "conversion cable" that will go from the stock speedo to the T5 mechanical drive or is there a different speedo all together that fits the stock location on the dash? Sorry if this offends some....I wanted synchro and overdrive for $60. Thanks.

Re: Speedo for T5?

adavis, I also have a t5 conversion in my roadster and did not want the long cable to the back of the drive shaft. My solution was to have a cheap hand held gps with me in the car. Once I used it I could pretty much tell how fast I was going just by how everything sounds and feels. I know this isn't the greatest solution but one advantage is you can also know your altitude. (very important in a roadster) Frank

Have you also tried to ask on HAMB?

I've been doing the exact same thing Frank. The GPS works great, but its not what I want for a final solution. I really want to make the stock speedo work or at least get a new speedo that fits in the stock location.
I will ask on the HAMB as well, but I figured I'd start here since I'm trying to use the stock speedo in the stock dash.

PM crazydaddyo on the HAMB. He's fooled with that conversion about as much (or more) than anybody and he has helped me in the past. Please pass on what you find.Good Luck

Re: Speedo for T5?

It all comes down to how handy you are.

You can change both the speedo drive and driven gears in a T5 to get just about anything you need to match your tire dia./rear crown ratio. They are readily available. If you have a later T5 with electronic speedo setup, it can be retro-adapted to use a mechanical plastic drive gear. You just have to remove the tailshaft and swap a mechanical drive one. The drive gear gets epoxied it in place on the shaft, as the electronic out shaft had a different locator point.

If you swap between WC and NWC tails, you may also have to change the little oil slinger on the end of the OD gear shaft. Here's a HAMB LINK. Read the entire thread for more help ideas.

Of course, once you get that all done and make up a new cable there is no guarantee your original speedo is anywhere near in calibration. That needs to be checked, too.

Re: Speedo for T5?

I just googled "custom speedometer cables" and the first page was this:

http://www.speedometersolutions.com/...eter_cable.htm

I called the guy and before I even got done trying to explain what I wanted he said "no problem, I can do that". He even knew what fitting went on my stock speedo and what goes in the T5. In fact, he even knew the difference between round and oval speedometers! He also said if I get him the tire size, rear axle ratio, and speedo drive gear tooth count he can set me up with the correct ratio drive gear to make the speedo read right. He said it should cost somewhere between $55-75 so it looks like that's what I'll do......unless someone chimes in with a better, cheaper solution.
Thanks for the input everyone.

Re: Speedo for T5?

Despite convenience and possible accuracy, I wouldn't be too keen on using a cell phone app. In many places using anything hand-held while driving will get you a ticket. Of course, you could bluetooth it to an ear receiver and add a second app to read the first one to you. "Thirty....Seven....Miles....Per....Hour...." HaHa.

Try Bill's Speedometer, in Sydney, Ohio. e-mail: [email protected]
Phone 937-492-7800

He made cables for my T5 and F150 transmissions to the stock speedometer.

Thanks everyone. I'll post what I end up doing.

Re: Speedo for T5?

For my rod's electronic T5, I was able to buy a pass through adapter that not only sent speed signals to the computer, and a stock keyhole end oval Model A speedo cable screwed straight on.

Yeah, but there's just something wrong with using Model A and APP in the same sentence. :)

I gave Speedometer Service Company all the info asked for; stock MGTD speedometer, 60hp engine, Mustang t5, 3.9 rear end gears, tire size, cable length, etc. For about a hundred bucks, got a cable that works. Marvin,ct

Re: Speedo for T5?

Although I have not implemented it yet, I have an old 0-80 MPH electronic speedometer mfg'd by Autometer. I plan to use an aftermarket speedometer magnetic pickup that counts pulses. A selection of rare earth magnets mounted to the inside of a rear wheel should give me a working speedo. Mine is going in the dash, but you could clamp one to your steering column...
