35 Ford Cowl Vent Drain Hose
 

What is the correct length of the 35 cowl vent drain hose and what supplier
has one? On my 36 humpback it looks to me like someone has installed an
extra long hose that goes all the way to the bottom of the firewall. On my 32
the hose is quite short. I don't see a listing in Joe's Antique catalogue for one.

That is a local purchase item, like an auto parts store. If the hose doesn't go to below the floor level where would it dump?

I'm pretty sure that it is the same as its '32-'34 predecessors, namely it ends shortly after exiting the firewall (and the water just drains down the face of the firewall).


Often the hose supplied with the firewall grommet kits is either too big in its outside diameter to pass through the hole in the firewall or too small in its inside diameter so that it won't fit over the nipple on the bottom of the cowl vent trough.


The original wasn't even rubber hose, but rather coated fabric conduit like that used on parts of the wiring circuits. You can purchase it at Rhode Island Wiring, if you don't already have some in the right o.d./i.d..


While I am on the soap box, the subject of a cowl vent drain hose reminds me of the nonsense directions that suppliers like Bob Drake and Vintique include with the cowl vent seals that they sell, namely that they should be glued in place. Duh! Why would Ford provide a drain and glue the vent seal in place given that the latter negates the need for the former?

Well, I learned something! This is what happens when you work on the dilapidated bodies I normally see. I didn't realize the drain went through the firewall, thought it was routed over to the side by the body mount to the frame, somewhat similar to the coupe rear window drain.

Some closed car windshields have drain holes in the lower corners and those drain down behind the cowl trim panels.

My plan ('36 5W) was to tie all 3 of these drains (2 corner windshield drains and 1 cowl vent drain) together and have all 3 exit the firewall. Anyone ever gone this route rather than having the windshield drain to the bottom of the cowl?

Droptop that is what I did on my avatar 36. Works fine for me & as David said hose sticks through firewall and just drains down firewall.

Thanks for all of the replys. Guess I'll see what I can find locally and install a
length similar to what I have on my deuce 5 window. Might just whack a piece off the end of the hose on the 36. Have to see how dilapidated it is.

I'm very close to putting the 35 body back on its chassis and am trying to get
some nickel and dime things done like installing the hose and also the repro
firewall insulater without having the engine/tranny in my way.

As your '32 is an early one, you'll need at least a 50% longer hose given the lower position of the hole in the '35's firewall compared to that in your '32's firewall.

On my early '35 the windshield corner drains thru the sheet metal and into the cowl sides with no place to even attach a hose. Kinda puzzled me when I first learned that corner drains existed.

Ford forgot the windshield corner drain holes it used in 34 when it redesigned the cowl and windshield opening, for at least the pickup They corrected this when they redesigned that part of the cowl in mid to late 35. My very early 35 pickup does not have the windshield opening frame holes. Don Rogers has all of the research Jerry

So a 4 way cross connector would be needed to drain all three out the firewall hole. Any idea where one may be obtained?
