1939 antenna install
 

Need some help ! I bought an original 39 antenna from a fellow barnner. It was missing some parts, which I now have. I do not have any of the instructions, or the template for the mounting hole. Number one question is, does the mast wire get fed from the inside of the header along the side of the windshield, to below the dash ? And, if so, which side. Number two question, anyone have a template and instructions? Number three question, Any tips or advice? My car is a 4 door sedan. Thanks in advance !

wire runs to the left side of windshield and there should be a ground clip at bottom left. try to find a repo owners manual for radio. as for template, i will check my repo antenna as kit may have this.

my new aerial did not come with template and state to drill 1" hole 2 3/8" above windshield. you will need a good hole saw for this. if your windshield is out i can give you measurement from the roof lip. the ground clip goes to the upper hand brake bracket on the longer bolt.

I would suggest a 1-inch Uni-Bit. The uni-bit only has one flute for cutting and it is stepped from 1/4" on up to 1". These bits keep the hole centered better than any other type of bit since the rest of the non-cutting diameters of the bit act as a pilot. Hole saws and rota-broach cutters will get off center and elongate the holes. Doing the job with a die grinder and a file are also a choice but it will take a while.

Thanks ' rotorwrench ' for the tip on the unidrill - that will be what I use for the hole - I believe in experts, I have made too many mistakes in my life. Hopefully your advice will save me a mistake on the drilling!

Thanks ' marco39 ' for your help ! And welcome to the barn! I did not know about the ground clip. Now I really need a copy of the install instructions. If any one has a copy, please let me know.

I would also welcome opinions as to how good these antennas work. I am commited to this style though, because they are unique!

After installation the radio needs the antenna trimmer adjusted --- if I recall correctly a weak station in the lower numbers, adjust for best reception---- this adjustment is the difference between working good and only one station

Bob Drake has the radio manual. it cost $6 and is well worth it.
