New to Ford Model A

Hi there. I’m new to Ford, I’m a Mopar guy but I decided to take on my Father in law’s 1930 Ford AA, who sadly passed away 6 years ago. I just started working on it. Not much to look at really, it was an old ranch truck and they cut the cab in half.

I just got it running. I was having a timing issue and followed the advice on this forum which helped me so I decided to join.

I’m not doing a restoration or anything but would like to make it a more complete and serviceable truck. I bought some new parts from All Ford in Campbell, Ca, nice to have them close by as I live in Hollister.

Just the usual stuff, I put a new tank fuel valve, fuel line and glass fuel bowl. I bought a rebuilt Zenith carburetor from a friend of mine to replace the Tillotson that was on it. I replaced the intake/exhaust manifold gasket, among a few other small items. Easy stuff. I bought 2 new 6.50-20 tires for the front along with the liners and tubes.

I'm in the middle of doing a head gasket as it started leaking real bad when I went for a test drive.

I'm looking for one more wheel so I can put the duals back on.

Anyways here are some pictures.

Welcome to the Barn. Nice looking ROADSTER AA! Cutting off the roofs of trucks was pretty common when we had orange groves in So. cal. They would put tanks on the back to spray insecticides.

I see you have the official Ford Throttle Return Assist Spring. A common accessory:)

Seems like a good truck, not a barn find or rust bucket. An A that needs the usual attention of an A that has been sitting with a little minor neglect? I like it, has character.

Neat old open-air truck. If you ever want a more complete cab, shouldn't be too hard to make a wooden huckster-type - you already have the bed.

And yeah, that horn is an example of "size matters". :D

That IS a nice old truck, looks pretty solid!!

You can run down a cab someday if you want to go that route, or make a 'Roadster AA' looks like that may have been what somebody had in mind... either way nice ride!! I like it!!

You are going to have fun with that truck. Hope there is a club near you. Good luck. I have two A’s and my whole career was with Chrysler Engineering. Still like Mopar, but the A is a very unique car, starting with the people who own them.

Good looking truck. I see an empty hole where the stock condenser usually is. If it has the conversion that uses late model V8 Ford points and condenser do yourself a favor and take that crap out and go back with stock Model A parts.

Fun project. "Tinker and drive", read all you can and remember it is your truck to do as "you" please with it. vintage ford froum and You Tube are other places for lots of information and good advice. Most importantly, "Enjoy the adventure"... Chap

I have found everything works on my "A" except sometimes I have a problem with the drivers window regulator.

Thank you! I don't know what sort of horn they had originally. :)
Does it really stand out that much? lol

You are correct, it has been neglected, needs minor things, I just bought a pile of parts from All Ford in Campbell. Nice guys over there.

I have since replaced that throttle return spring with the correct one. :) I'll update with pics. :)

I had a feeling I'd get some flack for that. It was the very first thing I did, to try and get it running... I was having a bear of a time getting spark so I decided to change the whole distributor and go with the modern points. It was probably an unneeded expense as under further investigation, I found that the key on ignition power lead was grounding out in the dash up by the fuel tank...And the ignition switch was worn out and was only working intermittently....It was a multitude of problems that took a few days to sort out. lol

If the horn sounds good, keep it. Pack hard used a big horn like that, and probably a lot of other cars in the 20’s.

Welcome to the club and and very nice truck. Contact Dick Crabtree about the ignition switch assuming it is original. His info is in the sticky at the top of the page.

The unique AA welled fender and bracket for the spare wheel are very very hard to find . I need those items for my 31 Express but I guess I will have modify a regular fender and fabricate the bracket . Dont let anybody sweet talk you out of them !!!

John in unsettled weather low pressure in charge Suffolk County England .

Great looking truck. Throw some belongings and furniture in the back, plus a sofa on top and you can go Beverly Hillbillies for Halloween.

Happy Model A-ing

Yeh, that thing is a real schnozzola. If it works, keep it. If it doesn't, fix it. Adds character.

Re: New to Ford Model A

I have a non original horn with that shape but short. It was broken but very close to fit the harbor freight ahooga horn to it. Just had to drill the holes with a 1/4in bit and that moved the holes enough. I have set up a relay and a ballast resistor to alter the sound to 6v. As my car is a 12v. That means to me at least that the habour freight will do 6v. It did need some adjustment to its tone adjuster to get a good sound out of it though. cheap at about 12$
