Fitting updraft carbs to a flathead?
 

I was wondering about fitting dual updraft carbs to my build to mimic the original build I'm trying recreate. Other than perhaps fuel leaking down onto the exhaust which would be very bad and perhaps linkage arrangements, I really don't see any downsides, but again I know nothing about carbs. Thoughts?

The pict you have is from a rare, JAP 1908 5.1L V-8 aircraft motor. I have no idea if that is the original intake arrangement for this motor, but it does look cool.

Unless your boat project was made pre-early 30's, I doubt it had an updraft carb since most manufacturers of autos when to downdraft by then.

Here is another pict from the side. There is, what appears to be, a singe updraft carb on top of the engine feeding the intake valves between two pairs of heads.

The picture you have looks to be a different type of carb than the one in the Old Motor pict.

What even more perplexing is the updraft carb seems to be feed through the top in the copper plenum.

Pics are of the same engine/ intake, but it is not original. I think you got me confused with Gavin? I'm recreating Richard Scaldwelds JAP GN using a flathead as the power plant. Pic of original intake.

I don't see any real issue in that if you mimicked the original engine, the carbs would be in the center - with some sort of custom "octopus" manifold design - if they leaked gas, the gas would be between the cylinder heads - nowhere near the exhaust.

Zigster, do you have one of these JAP engines or are you trying to recreate it with a flathead?

I wish. Had some suggestions on HAMB including air-cooled V8's from Tatra? Being that I'm here in NA, it will be an "Americanised" version using what is readily avail here. The flathead will be great I think. Similar displacement and likely similar Hp/weight ratio. I'll get it running with stk intake and carb, but then will massage it over time. Wanting to get more copper into the picture with a custom copper intake as well as brass looking carbs from a Model T perhaps?

There is some dude (Deluxe Speed Shop, maybe) how is running three updraft carbs on a home made long tube intake set up on his banger. The carbs hang outside of the engine bay. Looks cool. Supposedly runs well too.

Just a thought...what about dual side drafts ? One facing forward and one facing back.
Google Interceptor Marine y block to see that set up. Love the idea. m

Thanks. More ideas. I doubt I'll add a proper air cleaner, but thought this was beautiful as well.
