trans output shaft damage

I bought and am rebuilding a transmission for a non-car project I'm working on and was wondering why the end of the spline on the output shaft got mashed. Just curious.

Re: trans output shaft damage

In my case it was the roller bearing surface inside the main drive gear shaft that was damaged. A previous owner put the long roller bearing in instead of the short one. To make it fit, he removed the thrust washer from the output shaft. Trans worked but was a bit noisy. Amazing how much abuse these cars can take.

Re: trans output shaft damage

Possibly bearing snap ring left off or ujoint bolt loose allowing shaft to move in addition to above post possibilities

Re: trans output shaft damage

sometimes when people rebuild the transmission they put the wrong bearing in there. in the trans there is two short needle bearings and one long needle bearing, and some people the two short ones should go in the cluster gear and the one long one should go in the input shaft. it will jam in there, the cluster gear takes one long and one short bearing and the input shaft takes one short needle bearing.
