Drive shaft removal

Hi Gents-

I'm having trouble removing the pin in the drive shaft where it connects
with the banjo assembly. This is a '48 Ford with the torque tube. Are
these tough to remove?

Thanks, R Sullivan

Not usually all that difficult to remove unless the pin has wear steps caused by excessive spline movement. I just, maybe 10 min. ago, removed one on a '35-'36 tubular driveshaft and 10 spline pinion. Working on the end of the pin that had been peened, I determined the approximate center of pin and did a small center punch mark. Started drilling a hole ~ 3/32" dia. X ~ 1/8" deep. Then went to a ~ 5/32" drill bit and made the hole wider to the 1/8" depth. Keeping these holes on center of pin is critical. Then went to a punch that fit loosely in that hole, and using a medium weight hammer, I drove the pin out with a couple good wacks.

Re: Drive shaft removal

Now about a week earlier I did run into a little trouble removing a pin that was holding a 6 to 6 spline coupling on a '40 solid type driveshaft. The previous owner had ground a huge slot on both sides of the coupling at both ends of the pin. Then they started pounding on what they thought was the end of the pin (which it wasn't) with something pointed like a center punch. To find the ground end of the pin, I heated the area with a torch which then allowed me to see the pin. Then I did the same drilling on that pin as I described in post #2, and the drove that pin right out.
