Ventilating the Flat Head! Does the 8ba Flathead get enough ventilation through just the oil filler pipe? My motor does not have any other means other than this oil fill pipe.
Your thoughts please! Thank you, Alan [email protected] |
Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! It should have a crankcase breather pipe on the intake manifold.

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Are you saying that you don't have a road draft tube on the front of the intake manifold?

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! There needs to be an "inny" and an "outy".
|
Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! You could put a PCV valve in place of the road draft tube and run the line back into the carb.
|
Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! alan, mine is the same as yours, filler tube only. however---i have a small vent on the side of oil pan that seems to pull some air in. this is factory original. it appears there were many variations on these engines.

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Not all intakes are created equal. I ran a super dual with a pair of Holley 94's that had a fitting and tube that went back to the breather/oil fill tube at the rear of the intake. My current offy and single quad is set up a bit different and the breather at the rear is fine. I use the fitting at the rear of the intake below the carb as my vacuum and trani set-up.

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Petey, are you talking about the vent at the passenger bottom front of the engine??.....that's your down draft tube to let the fumes out.....Mike

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! I'm not sure about 8ba but here is the illustration from the Ford Passenger Car Sales Handbook for the 59A-B showing the path of crankcase ventilation. I would think the 8ba is similar.

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! It goes in[air] at the top and exits at the front bottom of the oil pan or the road draft tube.I thought i explained that to you on the phone. You need the road draft tube to make that work right. He has the wrong yr manifold on a later engine.Early manifold on a late engine. ken ct.Evidently he dosn't understand what hes got there. The air flow will not go in the same hole and come out the same hole.

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Well, Old Henry, some of us figured Old Henry Ford had it all bassackwards and this is the sorta of the way some of us do positive crankcase ventilation now. But I'm not naming names. 8^) Jack E/NJ

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Note that there's an inlet air filter wrapped around the body of the crankcase vent.

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Note also, the crankcase filler cap is a Chrysler PCV style filled with stainless steel mesh to prevent backfire into the crankcase.

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Note that your diagram does not show any of those items clearly.

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Wouldn't be simpler to find the correct intake manifold and breather pipe for an 8BA?

Re: Ventilating the Flat Head! Flatjack9>>>Note that your diagram does not show any of those items clearly.>>>
Sorry diagram was not so clear on oil breather cap, image shown below. The vent filter is simply a fine mesh screen wrapped around and secured to the vent body(I'm using a stainless steel coffee filter screen from WalMart). You can even use fiberglas or aluminum window screen material wrapped a few times around the vent. Hard to show all this in Old Henry's diagram --- it was hard enough reversing all the airflow arrowshttp://i822.photobucket.com/albums/z...t/breather.jpg so they all pointed in the right direction. 8^) Jack E/NJ |
