34 odds and ends

Why were 34's built with a pie pan opening over the rear axle? Ford must have had a reason for doing this that was not felt necessary 28thru32 and 35 up. Another item is the fold forward rear seat back, what was meant to be stored in that limited space behind the sedan rear seat back?
I mentioned a while back boring the 34 intake to later size vertical holes and someone said they were the same as later models. I checked a 49-53 manifold today and there is a difference, late model has bigger bores. Not a huge difference but enough to make a difference. So, has anyone bored a 34 intake?

The someone was me! Obviously, the later manifold you are referring to is that off a Merc. Methinks that if you try to bore out the 34 manifold, you'll bore into the heat riser- not good!

The later manifold is a three bolt Ford. We are not talking about a huge bore, maybe 1/16 to make it match the later carbs. I do know that the cast iron manifolds have plenty of meat in them and believe the same would apply to alum.

One of the best things to do is radius the bottoms of the bores into the passages.

Storage for jack and tool kit?

My 34 sedan had the jack and tools in that space behind the rear seat.

I think tools behind the back seat would make sense, doesn't seem like enough space under the front seat.

Tilting back seats are a feature of '32 phaetons, Victorias, and convertible sedans and '35-'36 phaetons, convertible sedans (except the late '36 version) and slant back sedans as well as the '33-'34 phaetons, sedans, and Victorias (except '34) In addition to tools, there's room for a small amount of luggage. Of all of those, only the '32 phaeton has room under the front seat for tools as well.
