WD40 through spark plug hole???
 

Hi all,
Life got in the way of running the model A for the last 12 months and with winter, I won't start it again until spring. What do you think of taking a spark plug out and spraying a little WD40 towards the valves to keep them from sticking over a long period of time???

Get your oil can out and squirt it in the cylinders a few bumps turn the motor over put the plug back in it and let him sleep over the winter WD-40 is not a lubricant that I would use for this

I just put mine away for the winter, added seafoam and MMO to the gas, drove it into the garage and let it sit till spring. Just like I've done for the last 6-7 years. Starts right up in the spring and no problems.

Don't waste your time nor money on WD-40. "WD" = "Water Displacement", 40th attempt to get it workable. If you have water condensation or droplets on a surface, WD40 will break the surface tension and let the water drain off, is all it does. It's not made to be a lubricant nor protectant. Read the labels of various products at your local parts store. Something like PB Blaster Lubricant (not Penetrant) may work.

Thanks for the thoughts. I like the idea of having something that is aerosolized so that it get's back to all of the valves.

If you have to use a spray bomb, use Fluid Film

Would those micro lubricants like Z-Max's work as well as regular motor oil?

You would have to be sure the valves are open and force the oil down the stems.

agreed - stuff needs to be put in the far reaches of the garage. It is good at removing stuck on grease off your fingerprints haha.

I rebuilt/freshed up my engine in 2009 - didnt start it again til 2015. Only thing i did was use the ol red oil can and squirt some motor oil down the cyl every few months and rotate it once or twice. 2015 it started right up with no issues.

Id do just that or use a foging spray if your paranoid - remmington gun oil is meant to do just what you want - prevent rust and stuck parts. (and its like $4 a can at wally world)

WD-40 is: Water Displacing formula #40

If you have water inside your cylinders...ok.
If there is no water, WD-40 is not the right tool for the job.

I'd use Kroil because it is an oil.

Keep it simple, a TABLESPOON of ATF in each hole, screw in 4 OLD plugs & crank it for 5 SECONDS. It's NOT Rocket Science, trust me.

FOGGING OIL is meant to lube the cylinder walls and lube the valves during the winter. Give each cylinder a two second shot through the spark plug hole, crank it over, then lightly screw plugs in. Leave a note to remove plugs and turn over prior to screwing plugs in tight in spring.

Bill Williamson has it right. If you must spend extra money, put in MMO or the ATF, but motor oil will work fine for an engine that is now running fine, Oil in the plug holes, put the plugs back, in a crank it a few revolutions. (with the key off) Spring it will fire right up. Trust me I say, from the 65 degrees of a cold winters day near SF Bay.

I'm an ATF guy too. Pour some in the holes, crank the engine over several times and it will find every little nook and cranny. Reinstall the sparklers and you're done.

You have to do what is going to make you happy and feel any potential problems have been taken care of.

Having said that. For more years than I care to remember, we have done the same thing without any spring surprises.

As little gas as possible in tank with MMO and stabilizer, check tire pressure, grease and oil everything, drain radiator, moth balls under seat and in rumble seat area, run carburetor dry, car cover. I also charge battery every month or so. Change oil in spring.

Has always started right up in April. Enjoy and Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to everyone.
