Speedo goes backwards Speedo only works in reverse
Hello any help much appreciated I have a recently restored 1934 Ford Deluxe 5 Window Coupe and the speedo has never worked in forwards direction but does work in reverse. I disconnected the cable from drive worm on top of the enclosed tail shaft and used a battery drill to spin the cable. The speedo works in the anti clockwise direction but that is when you are in reverse. Do i have the incorrect speedo ? Can I change the direction the cable spins? Is it possible to change the direction of the drive gear on the tail shaft ? Cheers Chris |
Re: Speedo goes backwards If you have the turtle on the torquetube turned 180degree it goes the wrong way...if i´m not having a before coffe moment...

Re: Speedo goes backwards No coffee required. Turning the speedo drive (turtle) on the torque tube 180 degrees will reverse the direction of rotation of the cable. In this case it will un-reverse the cable rotation.

Re: Speedo goes backwards Thanks i will give it try
I had thought of that but the worm drive in the turtle is angled so I didn’t think it would mesh with the drive if i turned it 180. I will take it off again and have another go. Keep you posted |
Re: Speedo goes backwards the gear turned 180 simply puts the shaft output end on the other end, making the speedo cable turn the other direction. I did this same thing putting mine together.

Re: Speedo goes backwards How does the speedo go in reverse? does it not have a stop pin at the zero mark? is this missing?
|
Re: Speedo goes backwards Maybe you put the body on the frame backwards.

Re: Speedo goes backwards Scratch the paint and see if it disappears. If it does, you have a special car. Just ask Arnie Cunningham. Oops, I guess that is not possible.

Re: Speedo goes backwards I thought this was going to be the joke about the two European guys on the beach and the potato..... :)

Re: Speedo goes backwards No, the potato was the two lawyers wearing the Speedos..... just to bring it back around

Re: Speedo goes backwards If the drive gear is a bevel cut gear, turning it 180 deg. will destroy the driven gear. They don't work so well like that. Maybe a straight cut gear would work, but not a bevel cut one. Al

Re: Speedo goes backwards Grumps, that's not right. 90 degrees, yes, 180 degrees, no.
The turtle can only be rotated 180 degrees so it is ok to do so. In fact, it is already working 180 degrees from the correct position, hence the speedo only registering when the car is going in reverse. Mart. |
Re: Speedo goes backwards Maybe it’s like the old Australian saying the toilets flush the other direction.....
|
Re: Speedo goes backwards So all australian speedos work anti clockwise then...just to be in sync with the flushing...

Re: Speedo goes backwards if you are down under, which way is up?
