Ticking noise?

Any ideas on the ticking noise? I tried going around with a stethoscope but don't hear the same noise anywhere on the block with the stethoscope on. Only when listening with naked ears.

Compression is relatively even on all cylinders except #2 is a little lower. Both valves appear to be opening and closing properly when looking thru the spark plug hole and turning engine over.

May be a very soft lifter noise. I doubt if it's injurious. If it gets louder readjust you valves in a nice warm heated garage.

Aha! I can now put the youtube user names and forum names together!

As to the ticking, well it sounds like cam speed, so a "tappet" noise is the most likely culprit. Is it a fresh build? Adjustables? Non adjustables? If not many miles on it I'd be tempted to get some miles on it, while monitoring for any signs of getting worse, and it'll either settle down, or if still there you can pull the inlet and check the gaps. If adjustables, you can make an adjustment. If non adjustables, assuming one is wider than it should be, then the adjustment is a little more complicated.
Nice to find you here on the Barn.
Mart.

Run a little Seafoam thru the engine

Perhaps a worn fuel pump push rod. Check the fan, I know of a club member who had a ticking noise that turned out to be the fan blades were loose on the hub.
Good luck on finding it.

Lol you got me Mart:D

I don't think it's a fresh build. I know it's not the origin motor to the car, I've owned it for 4yrs and the fellow i bought it from owned it for a couple years. He didn't know much as he bought it from the widow of the rebuilder...

I'm tempted to pull the intake, if not only to take a gander at the condition of the gallery and get an idea if any internal work has been done at any point.

Was thinking maybe the fuel pump push rod from reading I've been doing. I will pull it out and measure to see if it's within spec.

Haha, I'd have to install one first. Either that or get rid of the exhaust and do straight pipes.

On Noises: Local V8 club member did a an engine tear down looking for a 'thump'. Still there upon reassembly- a fat spot on the fan belt! Newc

Pull the fuel pump push rod and fire it up to see if noise is still present.
