Finish for wheel cylinders
 

I am looking for a finish for wheel cylinders that brake fluid won't remove. I was thinking powder coating but I not sure if it is impervious to brake fluid or not. I am open to ideas. Perhaps Parkerizing or black oxide?

Eastwood makes a nice brake parts paint that has held up well for me

I believe that powder coating would work - but ask a few vendors.

I had backing plates powder coated and the finish has so far resisted DOT 3. On a cautionary note the powder coating material flowed into a few of the bolt holes reducing them in size which had to be drilled out to accept the bolts. Could be a problem with the wheel cylinders.

Powder coasters have a variety of special elastic plugs available for blocking holes in parts that you don’t want the coating going into during the baking process. Obviously, the bolt holes and the cylinder bores would need to be plugged on a wheel cylinder. Naturally the pistons, cups, and boots would be removed first.

Years ago they powder coated all the rack heads and exposed pieces on the old-style in-ground Weaver hoists at work. We spilled every automotive chemical you can think on that powder paint and only one thing phased it, Carburetor cleaner. It took the powder paint off just like paint remover removes paint.

Either Parkerizing or black oxide will work fine.

I agree. However most of the shops around here that did it are long gone due to haz mat laws. Those that are left do bulk work and charge bulk prices.

I use this product on screws and nuts. It would work on wheel cyls too. I usually bead blast the part and it looks like parkerizing. comes out Matt black.

Part has to be clean. Wipe it on.

There is a guy tat advertises in Hemmings that presses in a brass sleeve into wheel cylinders.
