1939- 1940 Ford brake + clutch petal assy

Can someone out there tell me if the 1939 and 1940 brake and clutch petal assemblies are the same. I have been told to use the 39 to change over my 36 to juice brakes but I recently located a 40 unit that is much more reasonable. Thanks Tom

The '40 unit is much more reasonable because the '39 unit is the one most people want for hydraulic brake conversions, supply and demand. The key difference if the location the the clutch throw out lever. On the '39 unit the lever is out to the right of the pedal assembly and on the '40 unit it is over the clutch pedal.

Like Charlie says above, two different animals. The '39 pedals are a 1-year-only set-up. The clutch pedal operates the arm pointing upward at the extreme PASSENGER side of pedal set. That's because it operates the clutch arm straight ahead on the left side of the transmission.

The '40 pedal set looks more conventional with the clutch pedal rod going straight forward from the clutch pedal toward the new (for '40) extension of the clutch operating mechanism mounted between the frame's "X" and the transmission's clutch release shaft. DD

Several people have responded already with info that the '39 peddle assembly is the only direct bolt-in assembly for mechanical to hydraulic brake conversions.

Check out what Richard and Dennis Lacy have to offer. They make a kit that uses your '36 pedals. Richard Lacy at [email protected] (e-mail). earlyv8garage.net on the web, or call them. 626-338-2282.

Actually, the '39 pedals are NOT a DIRECT bolt-in, but they are the closest thing going for a '35 or '36 Ford. Below, you will find a PDF file which you can click-on and open with a template to use on your '36 frame to drill 3 holes, in the optimum location...….USE IT! It seems the general instructions were to index the template by using the BOTTOM, REAR-MOST hole in your frame as the one you DO NOT re-drill. Some say that using that hole to index places the pedals in the wrong spot with reference to the wooden floorboard. I've seen pictures where the owner used the TOP REAR frame hole to index the template to, and everything fits fairly well.

By using the CHEAPER '40-type pedals, there's no realistic way to operate the clutch release arm on your '36 transmission without a whole bunch of extra fabrication/engineering. Hope this helps ya somewhat. DD

The picture below shows the connection between the '39-ONLY pedal and the clutch release arm on the transmission. '40 pedals won't have this provision.

Below is a picture of the one "38bill" did using the TOP, REAR hole to index the template. Looks good to me!

I also made an extended clutch fork shaft so the '38 clutch shaft arm lined up with the '39 pedal linkage. You could also source a '39 clutch shaft arm that is offset so it will line up with the '39 pedal.
