1949 Ford f5 1.5 ton dump truck need info
 

I have a 1949 ford f5 truck my dad bought new. He installed an after market dump hoist and box. I need to find specs and manual on the dump hoist but cannot find a brand or marking on the unit, except the lever to engage the pump is labeled "Chelsea" and the valve lever is labelled "Schwartz valve".

Anyone have an idea of what this is or how I can get information to service the hoist?

Those valves and lift cylinders were generally designed to be easily rebuilt with hoses and seals, regardless of brand. Take your parts to your local truck repair shop and I bet they will be able to get it working. Same for the pump.

One of hoses is leaking. Upon removal, I am sure I will lose fluid, I need to know what fluid to use to refill. Also would love to find a manual for the unit so I can review all the parts and functions. Any leads to such info will be much appreciated.

look for a hydraulic cylinder repair shop, farm equipment repair shop- last dump cylinder I had rebuilt cost $75 for all parts and labor. there lots of makers of dump bodies--Heil-Gallion- and a lot others, most of these used easily available hydraulics, so dump bed maker is not needed as much as you might think

Chelsea is a PTO manufacturer. I have one on a small GM dump truck. Type “Schwartz Hydraulic Valve “ into a Google search and a lot of stuff comes up. I think as suggested you could take your parts to a hydraulic service shop and they could be rebuilt. I’m sure they could recommend the proper oil to.......Mark

Apparently you're not someone who just takes stuff apart without knowing what they are doing and tries to figure it out. You have a pump, a valve and a cylinder connected by hoses. As stated above, these things will probably takes standard size seals and o rings. They can make up hoses for exactly what you need. Here is a place to start. If they do not have what you need they wil probably know who does. Most of these places like being helpful. Good luck and great you are fixing your dad's truck.

If you raise the bed to work on it, put a 4x4 across the back between the frame and bed so it cannot come down. Pictures would help as there were three or four main mfg of dump beds back then.

Post some pictures if you can also my local NAPA can make hoses of any size and length, check yours.

Is your pump remotely mounted or is the pump mounted on the piston? You say it needs
a hose, so I say pump is remotely mounted with a tank cause there are no hoses on the
cylinder mounted pump. Does it go up any amount? probably very low on oil which is
from the bad hose, run of the mill Napa hydraulic fluid is just fine. And yes you may
lose some fluid replacing and hose on hydraulic so catch it in a pan. As said Chelsea is
a major player with PTO's. My bet is it needs more hydraulic oil. Common weepy leak is
the cylinder rod which about all have a gland nut or collar needs tightening. Note If the
pump is on the cylinder and is out of oil you will have to raise the body with jacks or
lift it with a backhoe or something because the oil filler is on the piston = no way to fill
with the body down. We work on a lot of this stuff and most problem are so simple, keep
in mind the dump trucks duty cycle is on the low side, I mean in the trucking world in
general if you made 10 loads a day your doing good even local delivery's. I mean by
'duty cycles being low compared to loader backhoe is working 100% all day with high
hydraulic temps, but a dump truck body cylinder will never get warm. I can tell you in a heartbeat what you have but we need pictures of body, pump not interested in the truck
we have 5 from F6's to F8's. 1949 & 1950's 4 yd to 10yd bodys. just tryin ta help. Oh just remembered our 54 F800 has a frame mounted pump and a big hose to the piston with NO
tank so the oil fill is ON the piston. maybe thats what you have. sam
