1931 wide box pickup box fenders

I am asking for advice on behalf of a friend. He has just purchased a 1931 wide box pickup truck. It needs rear fenders. I understand (maybe incorrectly) that fenders for this type of truck are unique and difficult to find. If that is so, his question is:

What rear fenders are best to modify to fit the 1931 wide box pickup box?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a wide bed. Original rear fenders are almost non existant. Some time back there was a post showing removing a strip of metal and welding back together to create a norrow fender. Dont know how close they resemble original.Do a search see what you get Luck John

I would go with the glass for now if he insists on having steel.Unless he has deep pockets and is willing to shell out it may take a while for a pair of steel fenders to show up.At least he can use the truck and keep looking for a set of steel fenders.I know of a wide bed leaning on the wall of a garage that needs fenders. The owner is using a narrow bed until he finds fenders to fit the original. It has been there since the mid 80's.Somebody offered him a set of nice fenders for $1500.and he just laughed,he figured he would wait and see if the seller would come to his senses and sell them for half. When the ad came out in Hemmings they were gone to the first caller.

Yes, quite hard to find. The only other model A that used these fenders is the small bodied 31 postal trucks. I suspect one of the reasons they are hard to find is the postal service usd these trucks until decommissioned in 54, once parts were obsolete, they scoured the junk yards for anything they could use to keep the trucks on the road. They are out there, I picked a NOS pass side at a local auction for 170.00, a super find!!

A friend of mine had done to his fenders as suggested above. He bought NEW repo fenders and had approx. 2" cut from the center and then welded back together. Very nice job and also looks very good.
Good Luck!

I would go with cutting 2" off center . It's been done many times by top restoration shops.

Macs in Moberly, mo. is your best bet if they are available. They do not have the correct rear contour, but require a minimum of work to use and look and fit quite well.
