I am looking for comments good bad or otherwise on the direct replacement led bulbs for the model a headlight. they are available from:

Has anyone installed these, are you satisfied?

Only leds on that site are for trailer tow. Lots of halogens tho.

Just google "1156 led bulb" and find the voltage and polarity you need. AC/DC types are available, and a lot of sites sell them. All I could find were equivalent 15 cp or more, so may not be good for park/cowl or interior.

I purchased the ones from classic dynamo & regulator conversions. Part no BA15d. So far so good. Just plug in and drive after normal headlight adjustment.

For some of the other bulbs, 1156,1073,1144,67 converts to LED BA15S.
1157 is BAY15D. Have not been able to convert all other applications ie. #89 Tail Light Lower, #97 Dash and Interior light. If others are able to find direct LED replacements for other numbers and applications please let me know so that I can include in my bulbs cross reference list. My email is [email protected]

All original bulbs except headlights are ba15s base. Headlight is ba15d. For added turn signals, bay15d (21/3 cp) in cowl conversion and ba9s for the pilot. ba- is straight across pins, bay- is offset. 7/9/15 is diameter (mm), s/d = single/double filament.

I read somewhere to convert candela to lumens, multiply by 12.5, assuming at least 120 degree dispersion of the led.

Not to hijack this thread, but I purchased LED replacement bulbs for the stop portion of my tail lights from Berts. I replaced the right bulb and checked the brightness against the left stock bulb. I didn't see any difference.

If you were to replace all the bulbs with LED bulbs, then your total current draw would be less than 5amps. The only real problem would be the turn signals if using the original sockets for tail and front as would not be enough draw to make the thermal flashers work.
I personally like the idea of reduced current draw. It is just a matter of finding a relatively inexpensive source for all the bulbs as the headlights are still a little costly for the 50/32 cp replacement

Just curious here if putting LED bulbs on the headlights can blind oncoming traffic.

I found these. I am thinking about buying a few to test out and they are quite a bit less expensive than the dyna more bulbs suggested above.

I have thought about those also Dave 1929. I'm not sure if they would focus well for night driving but may work well for daytime so people see you better. I tried calling them to get info but just got a recording. I left a message and they never called back.

Looks like a parking bulb on a headlight base.

Puts out light in all directions and is low power. Good for a warning light.

Dave,
Those bulbs will not work as headlights. The forward looking LEDs are not focused. The side LEDs may focus some. They can be used as brake/turn signal lights.

I used some very like those in a model T. It was actually an improvement over standard. But it's not for everyone.


There is not many LED offerings in 6 volt that aren't from specialist suppliers, which are hard to find (And harder to find in positive earth! But i see that dynamo specialist place linked above has them). One option might be to modify this 6 volt lamp.. But the effort required, particularly to the cooling might make it easier to simply pay the big cost & shipping from one of those UK places that has some ready made.

The British probably offer a better warranty though.

What would happen if you put some tape over the forward looking LEDs and used the side ones to focus.

For 12V, there is a flasher that works both with LEDs or regular bulbs, or a combination of both, Novita EP34. Autozone had them for around $10. They do not depend on current draw, but rather must work on a timing sensor of some kind. The EP34 works with 6 bulbs, the EP35 works with 4. I recommend the 34 as you need to count any bulbs you have on the dash that indicate flashing.

I've used them for headlights and the forward facing LEDS are about as bright as a tail light. They won't do any real harm.

The LED replacement I'd really like to find would be for the dash light. I really want a solution that doesn't make the casting scorching hot when I try and turn it off. I've achieved good brightness with the 50/32 bulbs from Bert's by polishing the reflectors inside.

LED replacements are designed for maximum retina scorching. Not likely to find much below 200 lumens, which is too bright for your eyes to recover fast enough to keep between the fenceposts. Best stick with the 3CP #63 bulb, which is maybe 30-40 lumens.
