35/36 frame id
 

Im about to start a new project and picked out a couple of frames in need of repair.
They all have differenses in the frame stamping and holes for crossmembers one is a 37 that i can tell but the rest should be 35/36.
Are there a good guide to id them around ?

The 35 and early 36 the back 24" of frame are different then the 37.I have a 35 and the numbers are near the steering box.

Some might have it readable...
Was more thinking if differenses was between factories or something like that.
Ill get some pics.
One is a 60hp that the motormount tells.

If you are replacing a frame the engine mount maybe different remove and switch what you need. I did a 39 with 35 frame.

So what are the differences in holes , stampings and gearbox mounts.
From the numbers i could read i got one -39 60hp and one -36.

There is a 35 early and later frame, and a 36. So 35-6 are not the same.

First 2 pics with the larger opening in the rail should be a -39
And the black one in the bunch is a -37 from the brake wires.
Rest should be in the -35/-36 but i cant tell them apart.

I find that the front cross-member is the easiest way to distinguish 1935-36 frames from other years at a glance. Once that's determined to nail it down further at a glance the radiator mounts are different from '35 to '36, also the rear frame horns can be. A picture of the front cross-member/radiator mount area can nail it down to 35 or 36 and the rear frame horns to early or late.

I should add that the above applies to American cars. European maybe different?

35-36 rear shocks mount through the frame, so there is the appropriate three holes in each siderail, whereas the 37's and later rear shocks bolt on under the frame. Too easy...

Not to hijack this thread but I was intending on putting my 36 3 window body on a good 37 5 window frame that I have. I knew that the radiator mounting pads are different which I do have the originals off the 36 frame. I did not know about the rear section of the frames, is this going to be a problem. I also kept the rear bumper brackets that goes behind the tail pan off the 36 frame.

The 35 and early 36 frames not the same as later 36 and up to 40
The early body may have set lower in back.
If your frames are the same in back no problem.
It was noticed when I put a 39 body on a early35 frame I had to double up on rubber shims in back. You should be good to go.

This is the first one to see the hacksaw.
A bit of rustrepair to be done during the week.

Judging from the photos of the front cross member, that's a '36 frame. The radiator support flanges at the front have two holes for radiators per side whereas the '35 support flanges have only one radiator mounting hole per side.

Ok, I have to jump in here. I am building a 35 and using a 39 frame. I know that the radiator brackets are different. I replaced the 39 brackets with a pair of 35 brackets. They don't fit on the 39 cross member which I know is different because of the 39 fan. But, after I bolted in the 35 brackets, the are still an inch wider apart than the 35 radiator. I can't figure it out. Advise is needed. Thanks

I figured it out. I was lucky enough to get access to a '35 frame with good radiator brackets. Took a lot of measurement and beat mine into submission. Thanks for listening. I will be back with more questions. I am restoring a '35 three window coupe. Back to original except a '39 frame and transmission, Columbia 2 speed rear and a 59AB. I will now get back to finding the right length fan belt to fit a 35 generator on a 59AB.
