46-48 popularity

So guys i wanted to get your opinions on the 46-48 fords. They seem not to be as popular as the earlier model fords. Why is that? i mean i think they have great lines. Is it the Flat front grille? A guy i work with calls mine a pregnant bullfrog. I mean they are not my favorite car like the 39 deluxe is or a 36 3 window but its still an awesome car. I notice they dont sell that good and you can pick up a project car for close to dirt cheap. So what is it?

Re: 46-48 popularity

I think it's due to the roofline and the profile of body lines. Some say it has a "humpy, dumpy look, whatever that means. Just doesn't flow smoothly as in previous years.

they are big and bulky, they are what the rodders call fat fendered cars, compared to the 40 they are ugly, really no way to make them look classy like the earlier fords, thats why there cheap and you dont see many of them being rodded or restored just my opion

Well to me the business coupe looks awesome and the convertible. The woody has to be the best one that was made. I have a sedan coupe that looks good also. I think if more were fixed up they would get better respect. But i will say you cant compare a 40 to any other ford. It was the best one made yet

I've always liked them. My choice is a 46 sedan coupe unless a convertible turns up . . .

the 40 is pretty, but i think the 34 3 window coupe was the prettest car ford ever built

Park any earlier year* Ford next to a '42-'48, should answer your question. IMO

*'38 humpbacks excluded

Re: 46-48 popularity

I think the 46-48 fords look great. Keep in mind that the change in body style started in 41 and then the war broke out and production was on hold. In 46 ford rolled out a new body style and the 46,47's & 48"s were for the most part very similar. American's had not been able to buy a new car since 42 and were buying new cars faster than they could be manufactured. Ford did not need to change the styling on these post war years because the cars were selling themselves. As a result ford made more of this body style than say their cars from the 30's. The depression kept cars sales down too.
I think that is why there are so many of the 46-48 ford out there still today. I think the availability of these years also contributes to lower selling prices. I do not believe they are ugly or not wanted, I do believe they are more plentiful in numbers than say 1932-1940 fords.
My grandfather told me that when he got out of the service in 46 he came home and wanted to buy a new ford. He went to the dealer and ordered a new 1946 buisness coupe. He had to wait for delivery of the car since the demand was so high and ford was selling cars faster than production could build them. These cars sold well and ford sold many of them before eventually giving way to the new 1949 models "shoebox" fords.

As the old saying goes "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I like my '49, but I sure wouldn't turn down a '46-'48 if someone was to offer to give it to me.

I like the 41 and 42 fords also. i actually like the parking lights better on the 47-48 ford better than the 42 and 46

Re: 46-48 popularity

I have an unrestored, stock '47 Fordor Super Deluxe sitting in the pole barn I got a couple years ago that I hope to get running and driving within the next year or so. Not a full-blown restore but just make it safe and dependable for year-round fun cruising.

While it'll never replace the '56 Fairlane I've owned since high school, I expect the '47 will get its share of attention when out and around.

And another thing - I'd rather drive an 'ugly' Ford than a - well. . . fill in the blank. ;)

UGLY?? NO SIR!!! Even though they are 42 rehashed, they are a beautifu car. Try to buy a finished 46-48 convertible. Upwards of 40 grand. Am I biased, yes I am because I own one, have had in in excess of 30 years. Even though its not a flathead now, it's a beautiful car.

Re: 46-48 popularity

I absolutely Love my 46. I love the looks of it and love driving it. I don't think there is one ugly part on it. And when I drive it around town you wouldn't believe all of the thumbs up I get. Last but not least I have taken my 46 to 3 car shows sense I finished it up and I have three First place tropheys. That must say something about the 46 Ford.

I used the term "ugly" not to imply I think they are (I certainly don't), but have heard others make such statements. In my opinion there is no such thing as an ugly Ford - except maybe that POS '74 Pinto I once owned.

As said previous my '47 is next in line to get road-worthy. After that I'd really like to get a jailbar-grille ('42, '46-'47) pickup to play around with - and as a book-end for the Super-Deluxe.

In your face! There is nothing ugly about this car. Just take a look at these lines. Streamlined and as classy as you can get (in the eyes of this beholder).

Re: 46-48 popularity

This is really a great question. Some car years are more just more appealing than others. My `35 Cabriolet is a good example. If it was one year older it would be worth half again or twice what mine is worth. It isn't as appealing as a `34. But I accept that, I didn't pay as much for it had it been a `34. So I guess what I am saying is be happy with what you own, or spend the bucks to get the more desirable years.

If I had the money, I would buy that pretty little `34 three window coupe that a Fordbarner has for sale. Why? Because I just love the looks of it...
