Brake Drum Help

I have searched the threads. Tons of info on this. Maybe too much for my aging mind to sort out. Just new cast iron drums. All new brake parts. New composite service shoes. New woven ebrake shoes.

One hub fits perfectly. The other will not go on. Switched hubs. No difference. Tried pushing hub on with no taper shim. No keyway.

No way. Binds up 1/2 ' from the backing plate. I am about to take ebrake shoe off to see if it is binding on the show or service brake shoe.

I have checked retaining spring in front of bearing grease seal. In place.

Suggestions?

Re: Brake Drum Help

Had the same problem about 2 years ago. One hub simply would not go on all the way. Swapped sides and same hub still would not go on so the problem had to be the hub. Did measure the hub race and it was exactly what it should be. Fortunately the local Model A guru came by to help with his box of rear wheel bearings. The first 7 had the same problem. With bearing number eight the hub fit fine. Pulled it off and inspected the bearing and measured it. It looked and measured the same as the others. My guess is that the hub may have been 1 or 2 thousands undersize, but something we could not measure. I finally shrugged my shoulders and assembled it with the one bearing that worked. Haven't had any problems. Never did figure out what the exact problem was.

Thanks. Mine has to be the shoes, I think. The hub from the other side would not go on either. Both hubs went on the driver rear. Neither go on the passenger rear.

Re: Brake Drum Help

I gave up on trying to get the ebrake band fit. If

I take the emergency band out, the keyway out, the hub will go on very tight on the service brake. So tight that I can not pull it off by hand. Have to put the hub puller on.

I put the keyway in and I can not drive it on even enough to catch a thread to put on washer and nut.

Someone mentioned the bearing. Could it be that I do not have the seal pushed in far enough? It is set just below the snap ring.

I have swapped hubs to no avail. Neither will go on that passenger side. Both will go on the driver side. Tells me it is not the drum.

What should I try next?

I did call Fhane. He was a great help. I hope to drive to Stuart sometime to meet him.

Finally got the drum on without the ebrake shoe. Still a little tight but I will drive it a bit. Left the taper shim out.

Will pull the hub again in a bit. So what is what then.

Have you mic'd the inside diameter of the drum surface and the emergency brake surface??
I will bet the drum isn't cut enough to fit new shoes. Most new drums should be turned down to 11.0000 at the start.

I take the keyway out
There are 2 keyways, one in the hub and one in the axle. The square piece that goes in between is the KEY.
