TransmissionThrow-Out Bearing Lub.
 

Is there a better way to lubricate this bearing without having to remove floor mates/plate? I'm thinking of tubing running from the alimate to an easier location anywhere else. Hip-arthris is my problem. Suggestions Plz

TO bearings are sealed so don't need to be lubed. The stock hose just lubed the collar, and rarely needs any grease, if ever.

Not being cheeky, why then the grease fitting? I am relatively new to
Model A's, I have on occasion removed the floor boards to grease the throw -out bearing.

Damn! I've been lubricating every alimate in sight, no matter where (except water pump) every 500 Miles. What a relief this is

The original release bearings were greaseable thru that fitting along with the collar.

Most replacement bearings are sealed and repro collars don't provide for lube to the bearing.

I haven't tried to see if the bearing could be greased with a needle or by removing a seal.

I got caught in the Timken bearing no/low grease issue of a decade or so ago, having to change/replace too many. So I'm pretty paranoid and now try to hand lube before installation.

Fitz, I forgot the originals did get grease from that hose. With today's bearings, grease is not needed, too much grease can ruin the clutch disc. To add another touch to the question, I haven't ever bought a new bearing, I lube them when they are out of the car using a wheel-bearing packer.

Thanks Jim -- my real problem is that I don't know what I don't know. Thought I was supposed to lubricate every greese fitting in sight -- but got a lesson with the water pump.

Lube chart (P/N 99053) says Throw Out bearing every 2000 miles!

Wait, If you are using the Original 1928 Multi Disc Clutch set up, the Nice Bearing Co. & the Ford Script one does have a fitting to lube it..

Lube chart was written 90 years ago. The new bearings are sealed. If you insist on squirt lube in the fitting, use very little. As already mentioned, all you are lubing is the hub where it rides on the transmission snout.

If 2000 miles was good in 1928 then 500 miles is over kill for a sealed bearing. :)


I just give it a little to lube the hub.

Ford tried using a grease cup lube fitting for the to bearing in 1932 but it didn't work well enough to continue it in production.

When you pull the transmission be sure to check the throw out bearing.

If it is stamped "Aetna" ... these are famous for going bad. As I remember they "seize up" when bearing gets warm.

Many of these junk bearings still show up at swap meets, on Ebay, Craig's list and Amazon.

It seems that not everyone knows about the problem or they know and are crooked enough to resell them!

Mount Aetna is a volcano in Italy, maybe that's why they used the name on bearings that self destruct.
