Generator output voltage I have a generator that I got with and engine about a year ago. Checked to see that it had the new bearing installed, it dose. Put back together, and spin with my electric drill and I get 12.7 volts output. Is this normal output or has someone put 12 volt fields in it? The fields look new. dose any one know the ohm reading for 6 and 12 volt field coils, maybe I could determine what I have. I want a 6 volt gen. Thanks..

Re: Generator output voltage Your generator can be a good 6 volt unit. The voltage can go as high as 40 volts if it isn't connected to a battery. The field coils should be about 1.2 to 1.5 ohms. In other words they should draw about 4 to 5 amps when connected to a 6 volt battery charger.

Re: Generator output voltage The stock generator can make over 40 volts in open circuit---- for a short time, the the smoke starts coming out of the windings
The stock generator has no voltage regulation, it uses the battery for voltage, are you testing with it hooked to a good battery |
Re: Generator output voltage just checking with a volt meter and spinning with and electric drill. will check the battery charger method Do I put the charger connections on the out put terminal and groung on the gen?

Re: Generator output voltage connected a 6 volt charger, got 6.2 amps? would this still be a 6 vold field?

Re: Generator output voltage Tom, did your test today measured 3.5 amps on a 6 volt charger. Thanks again Tim
