Common Wealth Engines
 

One for all the other countries, I know a lot of Ford shipped out of Canada to other nations did not use the Ford Engine Green paint and I've seen a few that were a shade of gray. What color do you paint your engines when restoring them?

When I was young and purchased a copy of the JS it said to use green.

This was most perplexing as I had never seen green on an engine.

I am pretty sure the Restoration and JS do not cover cars made in Canada and sent over seas. Which is what the question is about not US cars.

From what I've seen, the US judging standards are of little use for cars made outside the US. For instance, the dates of the introduction of changes are different.

An old time mechanic in Ontario told me back in the 80"s that Ford of Canada painted their engines grey. I have no way of knowing what shade of grey it might of been. Probably the same colour of grey the Model T engines were painted.

FWIW, Model T engines were painted black.

I have seen GM blue on a Canadian car way back in the 70's. He said it was the way it came. Could be a rebuilder creativity.

after having my windwing glass fly off at 45 mph and nearly hit car behind me, I had new glass made with holes drilled at clamp area, and drilled and tapped holes in clamps to put screws thru. not noticeable, and positive cure . kind of a pita tho.

The 1926-27 T engines were painted a gray-green color, precursor to the A green.

Was that in the US or in Canada? If it was in the US, what was done on Canadian engines?

Most, not all, answers to your Canadian questions might be better found at the "Ford Motor Company Archives" rather than at the Benson Ford Archives.

I never knew this till about a year ago but yes...there are two archives to choose from!

Yes the Canadian car engines where Ford Green or Ford Grey. I've found 3 engines that had orignal colour on them between the flywheel housing and the engine block. As for calling it Gray I'd say it's more of a muddy Green. I painted my Canadian engine this colour. I can hear the uproar when I take it out!! It like Calling Dawn Gray "Gray" It sure looks green to me.

Is it Right? I'm not sure but it seems right to me after finding 3 engines with it on. Don't know I wasn't there. JP.
P.S The bodies going to be painted Arabian Sand not the lt. blue you see on the firewall!! JP

The Canadian Supplement to the Restoration Guidelines & JS's states Canadian blocks were painted Ford Engine Green.
All Canadian engines were assembled new at Ford City Ontario, no matter where they ended up. Of course, later on if they were reconditioned by a Ford overseas plant, other colours may have been used.
My original car [ 64K miles when I got it 50 years ago] has faint remains of a dark green colour on the Eureka Planter, Ontario made water pump casting. Cheers.
