B4 oil pressure takeoff

I am not so much worried about the 32 B4 oil pressure as a number . But i want to test an older Rex gauge , so where would the best place on a B block be to fit a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

Re: B4 oil pressure takeoff

Just above the oil pan about mid way . there should be a slot head plug on the drivers side of the engine block . In this case I probably should have said the left side .

Does that plug hold the oil pump in ? I dont want to pull the plug then hear a clunk into the sump. Sorry I am a newby to 4 bangers.

No fear pulling that plug, the only thing it is holding back is engine oil.

It is pipe thread plug only. So don't try and force a straight thread fitting in the hole.

The screw in he block ( Pipe thread ) can be used , or if have the side plate off drill hole & thread in the lower gallery that feeds the mains , That's where I do mine , Derek

Re: B4 oil pressure takeoff

Thanks for the help. Fitted a gauge and at first i thought we had no oil. Its fairly new oil ,probably 100 miles. Pulled the fitting out of the block and yes there is oil there ,albeit slow to exit when running. Fitted the line back with no gauge , after a couple of minutes the line was full, presuming the old Rex-a-co gauge is accurate we had 2lb at idle and 4lb at speed.
The new banger we are building will have a takeoff where Derek suggests, as we are also fitting full oiling system and external filter.

If you want to build more pressure in the "B" motor you must plug a couple holes in the galley.
Jim Brierley puts out a book, on hot rodding the "A/B" motors, it covers most aspects and is very down to earth. see this thread; https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=274740

A stock B engine will put out about 4-5 lbs with cold oil, less than 1 lb. with hot oil at highway speeds. e-mail me for info on my book. [email protected] Thanks John, you are my #1 salesman!

Re: B4 oil pressure takeoff

I did purchase your great book Jim a couple of years ago when first we got our 32 B4.
I do not have it with me at present ,it’s at my engine guys shop. Due to lock down I can’t drive 40 minutes away to get it.
It’s times like this when I have spare time it would be nice to re read your book.
