Splash apron hole size I am putting together a 31 and adding side mounted spare tires.
What is the size of the hole in the splash apron for the side mount arm? I have pilot holes drilled that line up with the brackets on the frame. I think it may be 1 1/2 inches but want to be sure before I enlarge the pilot holes to the final size. Thanks in advance. Chris W. |
Re: Splash apron hole size Do you have the "donut gasket" (anti-rattle) where the arm comes through the splash shield?
A good plan would be to make the hole large enough to pass the gasket through and allow the gasket to seat on its groove. You want a little compression in fit - maybe such that the tapered arm can be passed through the hole but everything is "snug." Plumbers taper reamers (used for de-burring pipe) work good for this. Be sure to do both sides and follow up with fine sandpaper lest you make a sharp edge which cuts the seal rubber. Joe K |
Re: Splash apron hole size MMM not sure about the diameter. What are the after market grommets made for.

Re: Splash apron hole size Mine is off right now so I measured it as 1 3/4"

Re: Splash apron hole size Looks like you are going the right way .The trick is getting in exactly the right spot
There are tips to it including a centering method off the tire mount for 3031 |
Re: Splash apron hole size I have it centered. I have the hole just large enough for the iron now.
I do not have a grommet at this time and wanted to get the all the aprons and fenders ready for final paint and wanted to finish the hole before I painted everything. If I had a grommet, I could measure the OD of the grove. I just did not want to make the hole too large. Thanks to everyone for your comments. Chris W. |
Re: Splash apron hole size Otis anhard hole to drill due to the curvature of the area
Start out smaller and use a die grinder to finish size The contour will cause a hole saw to wander a little |
