Flat spot in carburetor
 

Marvel Schreiber carb purchased as new rebuild off Ebay. Car starts and runs fine on the flat but if you get into it or pull a hill it has no power you have to go to almost idle to get it to hit on four and if you ease into it gradually it picks up speed and runs well until you get to a hill then as you give it fuel it just bugs down. Kind of acts like water in the fuel any thoughts?

Sounds like restricted fuel flow into the bowl. This happens on the Zenith when the feed tube is pushed in so far that it hits the filter screen in there.

Might look for a vacuum leak on that carb. The MS carburetor is a good running one. I've been pleased with the performance of them. They have become a popular carburetor at swap meets.

I have Marvels on both my A’s They both run great. Next time you hit a hill open the gav a 1/4 turn or maybe a 1/2 turn, you will notice an instant in crease in power.w

I too recommend that for more 'power' to open the GAV a small amount. When I'm running mine at 55 mph I find that it definitely needs to be opened more than driving around town.

My experience with improper float level has been that the engine would backfire if the float was set too low . I agree with post 5 and 6 . Usually the pot metal carburetors like the Marvel and Tillotson carbs tend to have more vacume leaks . Opening the GAV a bit more will usually help .

The fellow that I bought the carb from was JR Bullock. Before I took it apart I thought I would ask his opinion. My carburetor has never had fuel in it that wasn't filtered so I really didn't think dirt was a problem nor did he. His advice was to open the gav until it ran properly. If that didn't do the trick ship it back to him for exchange at no charge. This is a genuine kind honest man. Saturday I got 6 metric bolts in the mail that I use on my Kuhn hay mower conditioner. In standard size they are 5/16x 1.5 inches long with 6 nuts the charge on them was 43 dollars, what a hog screwing! The point I am making is that we are so lucky to have good honest vendors in our hobby and they need to be recognized. As for my problem he was spot on and my car runs like a watch.
