Windshield glass installation
 

Anyone have any tried and true methods for installing the glass in the windshield frame. Doing a 1930 Sport Coupe. Brattons mentions using oil on the glass tape.

That is the way my brother and I did his. We cut off the excess with a scalpel, We put a metal rule tight to the frame and cut along that to get a clean cut without bothering the paint!

The setting tape comes in a couple thickness, so be sure to get the correct one.
I had to reorder to get the thinner tape.


I used bar clamps and wood blocks to pull the glass into position.

I need to redo my rubber seals in my windshield, does anyone know where I can get an exploded view of the windshield for a 31 Tudor?

Not to hijack the string, but I need to install the glass on my 29 phaeton windshield frame. I have the frame nicely painted and I don't want to damage the paint on the frame. The top is straight, but the bottom is curved. I can use rags or cloth to protect the top. I used pipe clamps when installing the glass in the 28 coupe windshield frame and it worked fine. However, an open car frame only has a tube on the bottom of the frame and it more fragile. I can't think of anything to use to protect the curved bottom of the frame from damage and sliding from the pipe clamps.

Some of the tape that dealers sell is too thick.

When I put the glass in my 30 Coupe I went to a glass shop and found he had 3 different thickness of tape, he gave me a thinner tape than what the dealer had sent. The glass went right in with no problem.

I use dish soap and water mixture instead of oil. easier to clean up after. Chap

I HAD my done by a glass shop a year ago. THEY BROKE two pieces of glass before getting the third one in. Sure happy I took it to them because the first two were on their dime.

Having a freshly painted ws frame, and needing to install the glass without damaging the paint, I came up with this solution.
Two pieces of 2x4"x 24", slot 1" deep x 1/4" + setting tape thickness wide in the center of each.
Stretched the set tape completely around the glass, joint at the center top.
Set the glass in the slots, top down.
Water with dish soap of the tape.
Lower 3 sided frame down onto glass, push until completely set. I was able to set without excessive force, ie hammer.
Turn frame with glass right side up and install the top metal and screws.
Trim away excess set tape.
This worked for me, no paint chips or marring.

Hand Cleaner with Lanolin in it works really well to lub. the glass pack. I like to paint the frame first around the inner edge and then put it together. Then mask up the glass and paint the rest of the frame. That way I can use a wood block and a plastic hammer to put the frame together. Closed or open car.

Post #9 method worked for me also. I used Dawn soap at 100% (no water). I did not need to use any tools to get it to come together.

18 years and the glass is still good in the frame.

If you have to force the glass you are using tape of the wrong thickness. The glass should slid in without much effort. Coat the tape with oil. After setting awhile the tape will swell. This applies to the lift channel as well.

Can you send me a drawing or photo of how the corners should look on the windshield glass setting tape? I tried using the rubber tape but not much luck. I have ordered the cork/rubber combo to use instead but still need to mitre the corners.

The new rubber tape that wants you to use oil to make it swell did not work for me. I had a mess of black gunk all over. I am not an expert, but the cork /rubber tape made a nice install. all I had to do was trim the excess using a thin metal ruler.

I taped the edges of the setting tape to the glass, then fold the setting tape around the lower corners of the glass and use a razor to cut the 45* corners, so the horizontal and vertical parts of the setting tape fit nicely together. I used a 6" piece of wood and hammer to tap the glass into the frame. As I recall some Vaseline helped, then use a razor to trim the setting tape once the top of the frame is screwed down. Slow and easy so you don't cut the glass.

I thought we had a pretty good time installing the windshield at Brent’s last year.
It went in well. We were a good team at it.

I've googled and googled but no luck finding the detail on the corners. Just a general installation video.
