1932 gas tank sending unit, passenger car
 

Deuce lovers -
What's the trick to putting a sending unit in one of these original tanks and using a "modern" (50s Stewart Warner) gas gauge. The opening on the tank is too small to fit the unit I bought from CW Moss. I was prepared to solder in a p/u tube into the new flange of the sending unit, but even the float won't fit in the opening.
There's gotta be some way to insert a sending unit and a pick up in that original hole.
Car is 6v, but not sure that matters.

I have put current production fuel gauges in two 32’s and on 45 pick up. I had no trouble with the float. I re-drilled the gauge flanges to match the tank holes. Maybe get another float.

Thanks Andy. I was hoping to not have to drain/remove the tank....but maybe it will take that. Appreciate the feedback.

You should not have to remove the tank. The new sender should go thru the hole in the floor. There are baffles in the tank. You need to check for swing clearance with a piece of wire. I would run the float arm to the rear of the tank. The flange holes are drilled so the sender is only clocked one way. I used gaskets to determine the hole pattern.
Edit I put put one in with the tank in the car.

Ooooh. I misread what you said.
Yes, redrill the flange on the sending unit.
Now my next question is...which sending unit did you use. As previously mentioned, the one from CW Moss I bought did not fit and the ohms were off (advertised 260-30, but only went 150-60). The SW gauge I have only went from E to 1/2 with that unit.

Is the original sending unit in a '32 the same as in a '34?

I don't believe so, but others may know better than me.
What I have landed on is to buy the Speedway sending unit (29.99) that is 240-33 ohms, which supposedly works for the Stewart Warner gauge. I'll have to redrill the holes in the sending unit flange to fit the 32 tank, but I believe that solves my problem.
