Mystic noise iside a rim? 2 Attachment(s)
Guten Abend.
I found something very strange noise on a rim that I can't explain. When I turn the wheel, I can hear a sound as if sand were falling inside. First I pulled the brake drum off because I thought there was something loose there. No, the noise comes from the wheel. I removed the tire and I can still hear the trickling noise. It seems to come from the side of the rim. Inexplicable that something could trickle in it. I think that's all full metal. Does anyone have any idea about this mysterious curiosity? |
Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? That noise is most likely rust inside the hollow part of the rim.

Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? 28/29 rims can rust in the hollow rim edge not much paint gets in there . If you put a strong magnet on the edge and rotate the wheel most of the noise will go away .If your rim is rusting drill a small hole in the inside and inject some rust inhibitor to slow the corrosion down .

Thanks you both for the quick replies!
Do I understand correctly that the two rim shoulders on the bead are hollow on the inside? And can drill a little hole from the outside in it? |
Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? You can drill a small hole on the inside of the round edge .If you drill on the outside rain/road water can get in not good . If you drill on the inside the tyre will cover the hole so no water gets in .You only need a very small hole enough to put a wand in to squirt rust inhibitor in something like WD 40 but more specific .

Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? If you go the route of drilling a hole perhaps spraying a thin aerosol type material that dries hard to catch the loose material and lock it into place. I'm trying to come up with what would do that but am drawing a blank at the moment.
Had the same thing happen with a replacement steering wheel. Drilled a small hole and squirted in a bit of epoxy to catch the loose material and locked it into place. No more noise. |
Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Werner, I have the same noise on two of my wheels, and my conclusion is the same. As far as I can tell, it is rust particles inside the hollow rounded "bead" portion of the rim.

Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Look for/at LPS I think #3, it's a liquid in a spray can and when it dries its waxy. I'am thinking it would catch and hold the rust particles

Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? 28/29 wheels only

Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Have 2 wheels like that. Drilled a 3/16 hole on the inside, tilted and rotated them till I could no longer hear anything. Got 3 oz. of rust from the edges of one & 2 1/2 from the other. Sprayed some rust killing paint in till it flowed out all over. A lot easier to balance now.

Hallo und guten Abend!
Thank you for the much informations. I am a little bit surprised. I was originally a little embarrassed to ask this question because I thought I was a bit of a spinner. Apparently, however, this is a typical Model A situation. Today I drilled out the rim beads on the outside. Then rust converter (epoxy with presumably phosphoric acid) injected with a medical syringe. Then let the wheel rotate very slowly for many hours. I chose the outer flanks so that the one-component epoxy can dry gradually and I have the option of being able to add wax without removing the tires. Therefore I cut a thread and can close the openings with M 5 screws. |
Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Nicely done Werner.

Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Thanks for the praise, Dave! -
I have a question too about this construction. Why did the 21 "rims have hollow flanks? The manufacturing process is considerably more complex than solid material. Is that only because hollow tube profiles have a higher kink resistance than solid material? Or were there other reasons at the time? |
Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Ford had the manufacturing know how as the very late model "T" wire wheels were similar . I think it saved material and also made the rim much lighter .

Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Maybe that was ole Henry's version of balance beads. [ smiley face]

Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Is hollow, still being two sided stronger than one solid piece? I can believe old Henry in the savings end?
|
Re: Mystic noise iside a rim? Yes, a hollow pipe is harder to bend than the same pipe diameter made of solid material.
