Flathead V8 engine cradle/dolly
 

Hello, First off, I hope everyone here is doing well!
Has anyone made, or have plans for a homemade Flathead V8 roll around engine cradle/dolly? I’m looking for something I could build at home! I’m looking to have the engine ride/sit lower to the ground as to have it stored under a work bench or similar area. Any help would really be appreciated! Thank you, Joe G.

I start with a Harbor Freight dolly and piece of 4x4. The engine rear of pan sits on one side of the dolly and the 4x4 for the front of the dolly under the pan. Engine weight holds the whole package together and easy to roll around. $7.

I have a stand from Stumpy's that I attached wheels to. It's low to the ground and very portable. It's also for sale if you're interested! PM me

The small harbor freight dolly and some uprights on the front and back . About $20 total .ihave 6 on them for over 3 yrs and still able to pull them from under the bench , if there's room !

I also got a set from Stumpys, l put some bigger wheels from Harbor Freight on it so I could roll it around my shed easier.

I've also made several of my own. Some are similar to 51 MERC's pictured above, and one of a slightly different design, but all were made from scrap metal that I collected over the years. I don't have any pics, but could take some and post here if anyone is interested in seeing them.

I have only one suggestion. Use the largest, best quality casters that will fit. I used cheap casters on a storage stand I built, and it takes two guys to move it around the shop. I spent a little extra on the casters on my test stand, and I can move that around (with an engine in it of course) with one hand. The wheels were just a tad small however, and the legs on my cherry-picker wouldn't quite go under the frame of the test stand. I had to add 1" spacers and now everything is fine.

Here's some homebuilt out of scrap. Good quality casters and easily moved. The crusty block we just put on a cheapo HF piano dolly and it too rolls easily.

I've built all mine with lumber like Petehoovie. Just use good casters. Have been in use for many years.
