Resistor for 12v Skip rewind coil

I'm looking to have Skip rewind some '42 to '48 coils for 12 volts, what
value resistor should be used ?
Thanks,
Charlie ny

Re: Resistor for 12v Skip rewind coil

Charlie, maybe Bubba will chime in but skips coils seem to be .8-1.0 ohms primary. 12v likes 2.8-3.3 ohms so..... In my opinion a 1.8-2.2ohm resistor would be perfect or close to that

What I’ve used is a Moroso part# 72390 1.8 ohm although I would prefer a 2.0 ohm for extended ignition point life

Charlie,

I just had this done. Let me see if I can find the paperwork. Skip lists it.

I just looked over the paperwork. It just says must use a 12V resistor with this coil. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Re: Resistor for 12v Skip rewind coil

The average ballast resistor for coils in 12-volt era are 1.3 to 1.5 ohms. Ford used ballast resistors starting in the 1956 change over to 12-volt. The coils were the same basic unit as used for 6-volt but the ballast was unnecessary for 6-volt due to the design of the coil.

The coil in question is Skip's design so I can only assume that he is referring to the 1.3 to 1.5 ohm type.
