Virus time off from school
 

Well schools here in Virginia are closed for at least the next week, and maybe a lot longer. Being their mom and dad have to work that means the grand sons age 8 & 12 will be here, which is great . They are really into Model As so we have a few things planned. They will help rebuild a couple of starters with new bushings, brushes and they will learn to use a Growler to test the armature. Have a couple of Zenith 2 carbs to rebuild so they will learn to strip them down, boil them out and put them back together, then put them on an A and see if they work correctly. The trans in my '29 CCPU has been making a bit of noise for awhile, I have a rebuilt trans to replace it with so up on the lift it will go and we'll get that done. Have a bit more body work to do on my '31 Budd cab AA SWB which we did a ground up restoration on, but it is suppose to be cold for the next week or so, at least too cold to do plastic filler and primer. They have been helping on the AA for 2 years and are anxious to get it painted. I have the new interior for it so maybe we will do the seat cushions.
We are also putting the finishing touches on a 1984 Mazda RX7. It will be an autocross and track car. We race SCCA and do track time at Virginia International Raceway. It has Corvette C4 front and rear suspension, a built Ford 302 V8, 5 speed . We are ready for the roll cage, racing seats and harness, fast and fun to drive. They both drive, I start them when they are 8 just like their daddy was, and have their own vehicles here on the farm, so they will get some seat time as well. They both drive stick shift..

Sounds like fun but you have a month's full time work laid out!

Virginia schools will be closed for the next two weeks and your grand-kids, 8 & 12, will have at least one online exercise per content area laid out by their school each week. THAT may encompass several hours of independent (adult monitored) work every day for each kid. Please look into it and make sure they do not return minus several weeks of assigned work. That work may require timely online submission.

It is not school "time off" vacation, it is distance/online learning for specific subject/content material as an alternative to classroom time.

Have 'em read a few books for balance, Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, Swiss Family Robinson, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Casino Royale.

MikeK and Juan, I understand it is not vacation and all the school work is done interlaced with other things, as a former teacher and present school board member, with grand-ma a retired educator, and their mom a teacher they won't fall behind, As to reading, the 12 yr old reads at least one book a week the 8 yr old reads every day, both are A students. We also have them from 7:30 AM to 6PM and sometimes overnight.


You could say that the mechanical work is Career and Technical Education or as we use to say in the old days Vocational Education. We are in the process of building a 14 million addition for CTE at the High School, the grand kids are getting a head start..

Be careful in having your grandchildren over and how much interaction they are having with other kids...… that's the whole thing about SOCIAL DISTANCING, it will help keep the spike in virus spread lower than the hospitals can keep up.

If you run out of stuff to do I have several starters to play with. My wife teaches special ed in Franklin, a lot of her kids don't have computer access. Your grand kids may learn more from you than in class. Learning the proper way to trouble shoot and approach a problem carries over to many topics.

Al's 28/33, No interaction Face To Face with other kids, and very limited movement from home. Live on a farm in a rural area with no neighbors with children. Sunnybrook Farm, if this lasts long might have to take you up on your offer, as you already know I'm up in Floyd, DIL teaches Special Ed at Floyd Elem, wife use to work at Check Elem and I taught at FCHS. It is like home school with a bit vocational ed. thrown in.


Citizens Telco is working to get students that don't have internet hooked up for the duration, I feel that is very commendable for a small coop to do. Each student that doesn't have a computer will most likely use their Chrome Book that they use at school.

My wife is at the new elementary at Windy Gap and the mother in law was PE teacher at FCHS her name is Nina. Anyway, I am getting back into working on my cars, trying to build an off road one to use on fire wood cutting. It is fun stuff most days, her is a link to my site:

In Prince William County Virginia, my 11th grade grand daughter was sent home with no school work to do -- zip, zero, nada.

1) All students in PWCS schools were instructed WHAT TO TAKE HOME. She should have books or materials for each subject.

2) Parents were sent notice 3/20/20 concerning home learning. Did they check their email?

That is not a wise thing to do.
Over here in EU it is FORBIDDEN that (grand)children come in contact with grandparents. The risk is too high. Not for the children... for the older grandparents! Children can be imune for the virus and still contaminate the older people. Wich can be fatale...
I'm not a specialist but I see what's happening around me.

3.6rs Thanks for your concern. I understand what you are saying but our circumstances are a bit different from a casual, see your grand kids on occasion. They are too young to stay by themselves and in the situation we have now, with the virus I would not trust day care. We live 7 miles apart in a rural area and see them at least three times a week after school, more now that school is out for the rest of the school year, in fact for a few hours every day we are their formal teachers. If they have/ get it we will get it. I understand the risks, especially at 74 yrs old. At this point they are not socializing with any of their friends face to face, just on Skype, phone and email. We are taking precautions when out food shopping (the grand kids do not go to the food stores or any other commercial facility while the virus is an issue) and limiting what we do. This could be deadly, and difficult times are ahead for the whole world.

Give it time... this escalated just as quick for the school system as it did for everyone else. The main priority is health which means isolating all students as quickly as possible.

Teachers have never been put in this situation before of having to online teach. We are making adjustments as well. Your granddaughter and all other students across America will be doing schoolwork very soon if they aren't already.

Be patient and keep in mind teachers are now changing the entire way they have always done their profession while keeping all of their students' needs in mind.

One things for sure, these kids won't grow up to be government leeches. If organized enough to get all that work finished and ambitious enough to do it, schooling is the least of their concerns. I approve completely. :D

Nothing wrong with education but look at the people right now who are captured by this virus, helpless as they are so limited in their skills. Diversity is preached so much now days, how about diversifying your skills like this fellow is doing for his grandkids. ;)

With everyone at home it is a good time to do family fun things. Today I plan on bonding with my youngest and make rice crispy treats. He is 26.

Kids are resilient. Missing a slice of formal education will not destroy them. Whenever things return to 'normal', they will pick it up where they left off.
Exposure to the Model A, it's design and operation is a learning experience in itself.
Other comparable unstructured activities will provide them with tangible knowledge they will not gain in the classroom. i.e. motor skills, trial and error, problem solving, maintenance and repair, fabrication, nuts and bolts, etc., etc.
Great opportunity here ! The kids become the winners.

Although I understand the risks involved, I'd love for my grandson to spend time here with me in the workshop but he doesn't have even the slightest flicker of interest. Neither does his father. My GS is sports crazy (and quite capable himself) so I can see that this time off school will see his consumption of sports replays go through the roof.
Maybe I advertise for a new one who is interested!

Wish I could find someone very knowledgeable and close to tutor me on the mechanicals on my A. Yes am in a club, lots of opinions, but not a lot of hands on mechanical help. Not looking for free help, willing to pay a little.


Syncro - hope you find someone if you are serious. For me to commute would be interesting. :)
