Mystery Bolts
 

I hope someone might help me identify the purpose/location of the bolt in the attached photo. I am finishing the installation of an engine rebuild and, though everything is now installed, and the car is back together, I have these two bolts remaining and am concerned.

I have installed some replacements, which may account for these. I’ve been over everything twice and can’t see anything as missing. The engine was rebuilt at a shop and they are definitely not from inside it. Thank you.

Are you saying the bolts has a nut used with it? I can't think of any bolts used on an engine that have nuts used with them, except for the mains and rods, and these are fine threaded. The generator uses a large bolt and nut, but they are quite large and fine threaded. The bolt looks like it has a doomed head. Is that true and do you think a course threaded nut was used with the bolt in question?

Old mechanic told me to toss extra bolts in the oil fill tube,they'll find their place:)

Is that a round head timing cover bolt?
Not sure about nut.

I too would say timing gear cover, but nut does not go with it. If the nut has fine threads and from it's discoloration, I would say manifold hold down or exhaust pipe clamp.

Wouldn't be for a motor mount maybe?

We need to know if it is a 5/16 or 3/8 fine thread, course thread, or what. Are the threads different on the nut and bolt or they the same? Jack

The threads are different. On further examination, I don’t believe that they are a set. Last year I rebuilt the transmission as well as the differential and torque tube (I removed an overdrive). These elements may well be associated with that work due to my bad organization of two separate, divided storage cases (clear plastic with dividers).

Rusty, thank you for the detailed response. You are correct on all counts. Since every “hole” that takes a bolt is filled, I suspect these two are leftovers from a previous project that were replaced at the time. I foolishly tried to consolidate two storage cases after the engine was out. While I was able to identify most items, such as the differential carrier bolts I replaced, I put these in the engine case.

Looking at the bolt head it appears to be from an early run and the machine was not set up correctly.

Damn the photo makes them huge. The use of lock washers with serrated edges makes them Model A.
